It turns out that sparkling water and raisins are *fascinating*. My daughter and I happened upon this effect playing together in the kitchen a long time ago, and I couldn't help but explore the system more deeply... 1/n arxiv.org/abs/2308.12927

Great thanks ⁦@CWQiu3⁩ and his team for organising such a wonderful #iSPN symposium at ⁦@NUSingapore⁩, very impressive program and housekeeping. It was great to meet many old and new friends (satisfied a lot with a few new collaborations:-).

Day 18 of great biology papers. "Life at Low Reynolds Number," by E.M. Purcell (1976). If you push on a cell, how far will it travel before stopping? About 0.1 angstroms. And it will take just 0.6 microseconds to come to a halt. At small scales, "inertia plays no role whatsoever," says Purcell. "If you are at very low Reynolds number, what you are doing at the moment is entirely determined by the forces that are exerted on you at that moment, and by nothing in the past." A classic lecture on biophysics. Must-read for students. Link to PDF: damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/gold/pdfs…

Out at @NaturePhotonics just now! nature.com/articles/s4156… Very happy to share our latest work, #SACDimaging, enhancing the fluorescence fluctuation detection sensitivity of SOFI by orders of magnitudes. It requires only 20 frames to achieve a >2-fold 3D resolution. (1/n)

Today I’m n Perth (the Australian one) visiting @CurtinUni to see some of their work in chemistry, physics, maths and computing. Curtin and @aberdeenuni have a strategic partnership and hopefully there are opportunities for better collaboration.

A bit of news - really pleased to be taking up the Head of School of Natural and Computing Science role at @aberdeenuni from 1st September. Sad to be leaving the fantastic @UTSFEIT but time for a new adventure. It’s been a while, but Scotland is warm, right?

How was your "day after" you finished your PhD? I'm referring literally to the day after, what did you do?
