Stitching the Standard by Edmund Blair Leighton

In Norse myth, Brynhild is the ultimate prototype for Sleeping Beauty. As a powerful Valkyrie, she defied the chief god, Odin. For her disobedience, Odin struck her with a magical "sleep thorn," stripping away her divinity. He placed her in a deep, enchanted sleep on top of a mountain peak. To ensure only the bravest could reach her, Odin surrounded her castle with a roaring, lethal ring of supernatural fire. The legendary hero Siegfried (Sigurd) braved the flames on his horse, entered the castle, and found her asleep in full armor. He cut off her tight mail coat with his sword, breaking Odin’s curse and instantly awakening her. 🎨Siegfried awakens Brunhild, c. 1892, by Otto Donner von Richter
