The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform is currently on a site visit to farmers in the Oshikoto Region, to hand over farming equipment aimed at strengthening local rice production. Debmarine is also supporting the initiative through rice production equipment. Among the beneficiaries is Samuel Amunyala, who has been cultivating rice since 2018 as part of efforts to diversify farming activities in the area. Chief Agricultural Technician from Onankali Development Centre, Lucia Shiimi, highlighted the importance of agriculture as a cornerstone of both household survival and income generation. She emphasised that while mahangu remains the dominant crop in the region, introducing rice farming provides an important alternative. Shiimi added that the donated equipment is expected to enhance productivity and ease farming operations. She expressed confidence that the tools will benefit farmers in Erombe village and surrounding areas. @MAWLR_Nam @DebmarineN Report: Peneyambeko Jonas Video: Loise Shiimi

The Okashana Crop Research Station, located within the Okashana Rural Development Centre in the Oshikoto Region, continues to make significant strides in seed production and multiplication, as well as crop research of different varieties. The centre was transferred from the Rössing Foundation to the Ministry of Agriculture in 1990, and it has since evolved into a centre of excellence dedicated to community empowerment, poverty alleviation, improved food security, and job creation. In an interview with NBC News, Chief Agricultural Technician Alfeus Nghishekwa highlighted the importance of crop research, seed production, and multiplication, noting that unpredictable weather patterns, advanced technology, and climate change make the center's efforts increasingly critical. Nghishekwa explained that the station focuses primarily on foundation seeds, including pearl millet (Kangara), sorghum (Macia), and cowpea (Shindimba). Their foundation seeds are carefully selected to improve resilience and productivity among farmers. He further encouraged subsistence farmers to adopt drought-tolerant and short-duration seed varieties to enhance yields, particularly in the face of changing climatic conditions. He encouraged farmers to visit their centre for assistance in selecting the appropriate seeds and determining the best ploughing times. In addition to research, the center provides subsidised ploughing and planting services by making tractors available for subsistence farmers. This initiative aims to boost food production for both household consumption and income generation. Furthermore, the centre empowers local communities by offering temporary employment opportunities, contributing to livelihoods and skills development.
