Today in History On 15 June 1956, Pakistan Air Force unleashed No 15 Squadron “Cobras” at Mauripur; a purpose‑built tactical attack unit whose emblem, a King Cobra with fangs fully flared, proclaimed exactly what it intended to do in the skies above South Asia. Within mere weeks, the Cobras welcomed their first T-33, sharpening skills in transition and instrument flying. Momentum built rapidly, culminating in a historic milestone when the skies of Pakistan were first pierced by an F-86 Sabre proudly bearing the insignia of No 15 Squadron, etching its legacy into military aviation history. On 05 September 1956, Squadron Commander, Sqn Ldr S M Ahmed, shattered the sound barrier itself, his sonic boom announcing that PAF had entered the supersonic age. From that thunderous moment onward, the Cobras carved their legend in fire and steel; downing an intruding IAF Canberra in 1959, fighting fiercely through the wars of 1965 and 1971, standing relentless guard over the Western front during the Afghan conflict and delivering precision Mirage strikes in Operation Swift Retort; each chapter forging a legacy of unyielding resolve. In the crucible of Marka‑e‑Haq, J‑10C Dragons of No 15 Squadron ripped through the enemy’s pride, shooting down 04 Rafales, 01 MiG‑29, 01 Mirage‑2000 and 01 Su‑30 IAF fighters in a display of precision and professional excellence. A police post in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has been over run in one of the biggest attacks in terms of number of attackers in recent months. Local and Official sources said that more than 70 armed Taliban affiliates attacked the post. More than a dozen police and civil injuries have been reported.
