@FarmAlliance1 Oh come on ‘other institutions pollute so why should we stop’ is a very, very poor PR exercise that only incites further polarization because it only appeals to those who don’t want to stop polluting. Farmers need to sort out the orgs that claim to speak for them

This is sewage pouring out of the Ballina (Tipperary) waste water treatment plant into the river, Farmers are sick and tired of being constantly blamed for water pollution when things like this are happening the length and breadth of Ireland. There are either no sewage treatment plants at all or the plants that are there are too old to function properly or are badly managed and maintained. Farmers are tired of being the whipping boys and the government and Uisce Eireann needs to get its act together. (photos J O'Loughlin)

The ACRES initiative, designed to support farmers in enhancing biodiversity and addressing environmental concerns, has been marred by significant delays in payments. This has left many farmers in a precarious financial position and has drawn widespread criticism from agricultural groups and environmental advocates alike. Farmers Alliance expresses deep disappointment and concern over the recent judicial decision to impose a suspended sentence on Cathal Crotty, an Irish soldier, for violently assaulting Natasha O'Brien, leaving her unconscious. This lenient sentence fails to deliver justice and undermines the principles of accountability and protection that our legal system should uphold.
Violence against women is a serious issue that must be condemned and addressed with decisive action. This case, involving a soldier sworn to protect our citizens, is particularly disturbing and breaches public trust in our armed forces. A suspended sentence does not reflect the gravity of the crime or the trauma suffered by Natasha O'Brien.
Our judicial system must impose penalties that match the severity of such offenses to ensure justice for victims and to deter future violence. We stand in solidarity with Natasha O'Brien and all survivors of violence, reaffirming our commitment to advocating for their rights and seeking justice.
We will be writing to Micheál Martin, the Minister for Defence, to demand that Cathal Crotty is removed from the Defence Forces. It is imperative that individuals who commit such violent acts are not allowed to continue serving in roles meant to protect the public.
We urge the authorities to review this decision and consider its broader implications for the safety and dignity of all citizens, especially women. Concrete steps are needed to ensure acts of violence are met with appropriate legal consequences.
We call on the public to voice their disapproval of this ruling and to support stronger legal responses to violence against women. We need a society where such acts are met with the seriousness they deserve, ensuring safety and respect for all.
