Out in the paddock … errr, feeding pens! A terrific day out discussing crop-livestock systems with Brenton Kroehn at Borung Poll Merino Stud. Who would have imagined so many similarities between Kanni, Cambodia and Laos?!?! @ACIARAustralia @CrawfordFund @DentonLab

A UK city council which banned the weedkiller glyphosate is reconsidering its policy after finding manual removal of weeds ineffective, costly, and time-consuming.

@acagamic And surely merit extends well beyond publication. ‘Research with impact’ must be the objective - aspire to use research to change rather than to be cited by an incredibly limited number of authors. A Publication can’t be the goal of research

Most professors are secretly terrified of
publish-or-perish culture.
This is the inside scoop:
1. Tenure Track Terror
Often, promotions hinge on publications.
This leads to a race to publish.
Not to innovate.
Impact: Samey Science
Research gets safe and predictable.
It fits specific top journals, formats, paradigms.
This neglects valuable work that might not conform.
2. Funding Frenzy
Funding favours professors with long publication lists.
It discourages riskier research.
Stops promising research.
Impact: Neglect of Important Areas
You can't publish some risky things.
So, important areas often get ignored.
High-impact journals demand trendier formats.
3. Journal Jungle
They are the ultimate prize.
Top journals with low acceptance rates.
This narrows the research focus to their agendas.
Impact: Tunnel Vision Research
Researchers chase trends and hot topics.
Fewer individuals know neglected areas.
Their influence might be large.
4. Citation Craze
Everyone obsesses over citing publications.
This pressures scholars to follow the crowd.
Misses crucial but less-cited research.
Impact: Hidden Gems Lost in the Crowd
Valuable work gets overlooked too often.
It doesn't fit the citation game.
If it's not cited, is it good?
5. Publish or Perish Mentality
This pervasive pressure in academia creates anxiety.
This makes genuine intellectual pursuits suffer.
It hinders creativity.
Impact: Too Many Research Robots, Not Thinkers
Rushing to publish leads to superficial work.
Produces flawed research.
Lacks depth & originality.
6. Quantity over Quality?
Need to publish causes rushed publications.
Shallow research sacrifices thoroughness.
New data over replication.
Impact: Shoddy Science = Trembling Trust
Unreliable research findings damage public trust.
This impacts the perception of science.
And it hinders scientific progress.
7. Desperate Measures
In extreme cases, unethical practices emerge.
Fabrication and data manipulation.
Creation instead of investigation.
Impact: Crisis of Confidence in Science
Don't publish for your peers.
Ethical lapses erode trust in science.
They make it harder to believe research findings.
We need to focus on:
• Quality
• Originality
• Long-term research impact
What can we do?
1. Fund research based on merit, not metrics.
2. Create a culture that values curiosity, responsible conduct, and genuine contribution to knowledge.
3. Support open-access publishing. It makes research accessible to all and fights publisher exploitation.

@LifeAfterMyPhD No one else will ever read what you have devoted valuable years of your life to create

@LifeAfterMyPhD That for most graduates, all things considered, you will be financially worse off and will probably never recoup your investment. The streets are not lined with gold the day you graduate
