UCM’s Live Mule Mascot Tradition For over 100 years, @UCMFootballTeam has upheld one of college sports’ most distinctive live mascot programs. The tradition features full-sized mules, student riders, and carefully maintained gameday rituals each fall in Warrensburg, Missouri ⬇️ In 1922, UCM (then Central Missouri State Teachers College) adopted the mule as its mascot through a student vote, inspired by Missouri’s storied “Missouri Mule” of early 20th-century agriculture. This bold symbol became a cornerstone of UCM pride. 🔹 Origins ➖ Students chose the mule in 1922, tying it to Missouri’s reputation as a mule-breeding hub. ➖ It replaced outdated nicknames, cementing a new identity. 🔹 Live mascot legacy ➖ The tradition began post-WWII with Gizmo, followed by mules like Little Mo and Abbedale. ➖ Today, Mancow and Molly carry the mantle, starting with Molly’s debut in 2017. 🔹 How it works ➖ Mancow and Molly live at Prussing Research Farm, cared for by agriculture students. ➖ Two Mule Riders (one veteran, one apprentice) lead the mules at games, outfitted in UCM gear. 🔹 Game-day impact ➖ A mule greets fans in tailgate areas and stands for the National Anthem. ➖ It runs the sideline after touchdowns, flag flying, as part of the home game experience. 🔹 Milestones ➖ UCM celebrated the mascot’s 100th anniversary in 2022. ➖ In 2021, UCM set a Guinness World Record with 50 mules in its Homecoming parade. The live mule remains a proud symbol of UCM’s agricultural roots and campus spirit. From tailgates to touchdown runs at Walton Stadium, it’s the heart of Mules football.
