You just spent three paragraphs explaining why a democratically elected president deserved to be tortured to death in his own palace. Let's go point by point. Yes, Allende won 36.2% in a three-way race. Under Chilean constitutional law, the Congress then confirmed him, as it had done before, as the system was designed to do. This was not a crisis of legitimacy. This was the Chilean constitution functioning exactly as written. Salvador Allende was the legal president of Chile. Full stop. By your logic, Abraham Lincoln, who won 39.8% in a four-way race in 1860, was also an illegitimate president. You would never say that about Lincoln. You would never apply this constitutional standard to any leader whose removal you weren't already convinced was justified. The standard isn't principled. It's retrospective. You begin with the coup and work backwards to the justification. The "ruled by decree" claim collapses under scrutiny. Allende used resquicios legales, existing legal statutes, to advance nationalization. The same legal tools previous governments had used. His opposition, which controlled Congress, blocked every legislative initiative he attempted through normal channels and then accused him of bypassing normal channels when he found alternatives. This is called obstruction. It has a name. The Supreme Court and legislature did pass resolutions against him. What you omit is that this opposition was being funded and coordinated by the CIA and the Nixon administration, documented in declassified U.S. government records. ITT Corporation actively lobbied Washington to destabilize the Chilean economy. "Make the economy scream" was Nixon's actual instruction to the CIA. This is not disputed. This is in the documents. The "private militia with Cuban help" is the tell. Allende had a personal security detail. Every head of state has a security detail. The armed groups that existed in Chile existed across the political spectrum, including on the right, which was also arming itself. And then the conclusion: "only then did the Court and the legislature ask the army to remove him." Ask the army. As if Pinochet needed a formal request. As if what followed was a polite administrative transfer. What followed was: Allende bombed in his own presidential palace. Three thousand people murdered. Tens of thousands tortured, including in the national soccer stadium, converted into a detention camp. Hundreds of thousands forced into exile. An economy handed to Milton Friedman's students to run as an experiment while political opposition was eliminated with bullets. This is what "the army removed him" looked like, Tom. Your entire argument is the most refined version of what was described in my original post: the word "communist" did its work on Allende, and now, fifty years later, you are still providing the retrospective justification for it, dressed in constitutional proceduralism, stripped of its consequences, cleansed of the CIA cables and the stadium and the names of the dead. The word was a termination signal. You are still transmitting it. You just swapped the frequency for something that sounds like political science.

No, Sony, Allende didn’t win a democratic election. In a three way race he got around 37 percent of the vote, which was not enough to win. This threw the election to Chile’s legislature, which gave the presidency to Allende only after extracting a promise from him that he would not try to rule by decree. They apparently knew their Allende because, of course, he did begin to rule by decree, ignoring both the legislature and the Supreme Court. When he began building a private party militia, with Cuban help, only then did the Court and the legislature ask the army to remove him which, of course, the army did.

Finland gave every homeless person a house and within 6 months 85% had a job and were financially independent. Less crime, less hospital visits, less suffering and even including the cost of the house, LESS COST than the UK/USA method of abandoning them on the streets.

Favor compartir. Gracias publiccl1.fidelizador.com/scd/public/cam…
