So, I'm to understand that in Japan, they leave little gifts at the table in exchange for the service, though I'm not sure how true that is. In America, your expected to give a tip, or a gratuitous amount of money based on 5% or 10% of the bill. Fancy restaurants expect somewhere around 10 to 15 dollars, where was cheaper places, you can get off with 5 dollars. Also, this usually isn't that bad, you don't actually have to pay the tip. It's just usually a thing that's done for good service. Myself and many others in America actually think tip culture should go away and that the servers pay should be baked into the cost of the bill. It's not.

So I went to a diner in America. The food was 12 dollars. I paid 12 dollars. The waiter just stood there. Looking at me. I understood immediately. He wanted to fight. In Japan we bow. So I bowed. He looked more upset. I bowed lower. Now I am almost on the floor. Another waiter came over. Two of them now, standing, waiting. I am bowing so low my forehead is on the table. Finally one of them whispered the word. "Tip." I had no idea what it meant. So I bowed one more time and ran. I have been banned from that diner. Was the bowing wrong, or the running?

@FatChocobo @ebibebibae Worse, I know of cases where the employer is excessively petty about visa errands. A Japanese software company which changed its registered headquarters address told a friend of mine he needed to take a half day of (paid) time off to report it, reducing his discretionary PTO

1 The racism in the comments is appalling 2 Ppl seem to think u pay for the 5-yr visa slowly over 5 yrs in installments? No. Why would it work like that? U can’t get the visa in the 1st place if u don’t have ¥70,000. Which is hard if u make 10万 after bills like a lot of ppl do
magdalena osumi | 大住マグダレナ 💁🏼‍♀️@jt_mag_os

Let’s wait for visa renewal period when the new planned changes start applying. ¥70,000 for a five year visa…. For many people it’s quite a large portion of their income. The direction shows how Japan only wants white wealthy “expats” to stay.

@OnLon10 @cx_clips Foreigners getting involved in this kind of situation in Japan often ends poorly for them, unfortunately. If they were to pull the guy off of the girl then there's a reasonable chance that they'd be the ones that'd get in trouble.

@JasnTru @ebibebibae Every company I've ever worked for/with has always covered necessary visa fees, so I'd assumed it was the norm -- didn't realise that's not the case!

@ebibebibae One of the things that annoyed me about the government rhetoric that Japan is Just Matching Foreign Visa Processing Fees (aside from much lower typical incomes here) is that outside of Japan the bill is often footed by employers. Not at all the norm in Japan.

@bunburyoudoujp Whatever they were before getting Japanese preeminent residency. You know they don’t play the liberal game. You’ll always be English (I’m sorry) and I’ll always be American. (Please God, don’t let it become like England!🙏🏼, lol)

@Ohshidash Yep but there is not enough discussions on the evolving technology, like snaptap for the new razer keyboard that was out last year for example. And controller wise there's a whole other huge discussion. Like honestly the issue is there is not enough real convos about it

This is a topic that does merit some more open discussion than has been had recently. Imo anything that plays the game for you should be banned, but a reconfigured controller (paddles, button layouts, etc) should be fine.
Alliance kelly@kellymilkies

It's 2026 and we are still banning gear in esports when R&D has advanced. Certain keyboards with functions and controllers are banned in competition. What is the purpose of gear companies spending millions in innovation when game devs ban them without proper understanding (1/2)

@TBYSTweet I live in Tokyo and I don't remember the last time anyone approached me in English. If people insist on speaking English to you, then as you point out, it usually means your Japanese is unintelligible.

Think Before You Sleep
So during my most recent trip to Japan I have noticed something. I have been assured by long term tourists such as Abroad in Japan and Connor from Trash Taste that it is so hard to learn Japanese while you're in Japan because EVERYONE just wants to speak English to you. You can imagine my shock that when I arrived in Japan this time with much improved Japanese compared to 8 months ago and VERY FEW people try to speak English to me. The best part is that I'm not even that good. I still have a long way to go before I get to where I want to be in the language. So what does that say about a person like Chris who has been living in Japan for 14 years and considers himself a local Japanese person and an expert on Japanese culture yet still is getting constantly prompted to speak English? More than half a year later, it continuously surprises me how arrogant these people are about their knowledge of a culture they refuse to be a part of. Especially with the constantly self-reporting on how low their Japanese level is despite living in the country for 10+ years or the better part of a decade.

@s_s_1_9 @ayeedun @AliKh1886 Reading between the lines: they don't want plebs who actually need an income to live to do these jobs, the salary is a filter for social class of applicants.

@ayeedun @AliKh1886 That's sorta just how these roles work. They select for people who are highly mission-driven, prestige/public-affairs-motivated, financially independent, and/or willing to trade salary for career capital. There's a lot of benefits wrt opportunity cost for such roles.

@auau_mii @witchbabyy @OliverJia1014 Eating out is definitely far cheaper than any other developed country that I'm aware of. The quality of food you can get for 1 hour of minimum wage pay in Tokyo is so much better than the US / UK etc.

It’s in the original tweets. Low wages to start with, getting the chunk of salary taken out for juminzei/hoken/nenkin, transport to and from work, rent, utilities, etc. ¥1000/night dinner is ¥30,000/month JUST eating dinner. You haven’t even added breakfast and lunch yet
Denzel@Denzel_Foley

@ebibebibae It literally is though like what are you spending all on your money on that you so broke you can't afford 1000 yen for dinner each night?

They cant help themselves. They don’t take into account that Japanese people don’t earn USD, and that these “full meals” are expensive for young people who live and work here. They can’t understand that money isn’t 1:1 between countries. I see this argument several times a week
🌘ʀᴇᴠᴇɴᴀɴᴛ⚡@revenant_MMXX

Japan has some of the cheapest food in the developed world and it's not even close so frankly I don't want advice from someone who can get a full meal out for like $5 USD and where absolutely everybody is eating out at restaurants constantly
