The LCE election results are undeniable evidence that the Maldivian people demand reform, and that MDP is the vessel they have chosen to put their faith in. We must answer their trust by modernizing, understanding the demands of the current day, and evolving to meet the citizens needs. The path to doing so begins with ensuring a fair and transparent process to elect a new chair of MDP. Given that the current chair has proven unable to maintain the momentum and unity that led to this huge win, and has been forced to disregard the constitution of the party in removing elected officials from the positions, I have signed the motion to remove the current chair of MDP and pave the way forward to better days. Without systemic reform we risk falling back into old failures. The path to reforming MDP is a long and arduous one. We must re-envision and redetermine the values by which we stand, and rebuild the foundation of the party that brought democracy to the Maldives, and the only one to have ever sought to serve the people of the country. This is the time to debate and question, and to build the way forward to a party that is once again connected with the roots of this country. I call for a congress of the party to be held with the greatest haste, and for all citizens and members of the party to put forward ideas that will help shape the path of reform this party must take. If we wish to reform our country, we must first reform our party.

The Maldivian people have overwhelmingly rejected President Muizzu at yesterday’s polls, both for the referendum and the local council elections. This verdict is the result of the obliteration of separation of powers, a failing economy, and the growing tyranny of the administration and the president, all of which the people have wholeheartedly rejected. What is clear from the debate and discussion of the past weeks is that there is appetite for real reform, and though President Muizzu’s referendum was rejected, we are clearly overdue for a rethink of our constitution and our systems of governance as a whole. With the win comes a deep responsibility. We must work with the people toward finding solutions that serve all of us, and execute the mandate given to us wisely.
