The quick money mentality social media has introduced is slowly weakening our youth.
We now think in algorithms. We act for engagement. We measure success by views.
In Nigeria today, scandal travels faster than substance. Drama trends. Value struggles.
The Mirabel situation is a clear example of how sensitive issues can explode because they attract attention. Whether true or false, the reality is this controversy dominated the space. It got Nigerians talking. It fed the algorithm.
And that is the real issue.
When young people observe that scandals trend more than solutions, some will begin to design their actions around what shocks rather than what builds. Not necessarily because they lack sense but because that is what gets rewarded.
Platforms like TikTok have created opportunity, yes. But they have also amplified a culture where visibility feels like achievement.
The consuming nature of the average Nigerian makes it worse. We amplify noise faster than knowledge. We reward outrage quicker than intelligence.
Gradually, we are drifting from raising nation builders to raising attention seekers.
If we do not redirect this mindset, more extreme actions will emerge because when attention becomes survival, people will always find ways to stay visible.
A nation cannot trend its way into development.
We must shift from clout to competence. From virality to value. From noise to nation building.
