The panel on the session, 'Beyond the Black Box: Safeguarding Regional Data Systems,' emphasized the critical need for public participation in shaping data systems and policies, particularly as East Africa embraces rapid technological advancement. They discussed the importance of adopting policies that reflect citizens’ realities, highlighting that while digitization offers significant opportunities and value for every citizen, trust remains a foundational element. Concerns were raised about data misuse, including fears that personal information could be sold or exchanged long after collection, which undermines confidence in digital systems. The conversation also recognized regional progress, applauding countries such as Burundi for signing onto the data governance agenda and emphasizing the need for coordinated regional efforts. Importantly, participants stressed moving beyond the mere existence of legislation to its practical implementation, ensuring that institutions such as the ODPC remain independent and free from political interference, thereby enabling data systems that are not only efficient but also trusted, accountable, and citizen-centered. @Open_Institute @ODPC_KE #EADataGov26 #DataProtectionKE
