Europe is actively promoting militarization, as evidenced by recent materials and interviews, in order to build a large and capable army in preparation for a potential conflict with Russia. However, few people pay attention to the other side of this push: namely, the increased risk of escalation that arises precisely from the constant public glorification of military power and militarization. Those who genuinely want peace do not loudly advertise their military strength or militarization at every opportunity. It is worth noting that most politicians who champion militarization are likely to ensure that their own children and relatives are kept far from any real war. Communication with an adversary is an extremely delicate and highly professional matter. As a former press secretary, there were moments when a single word from me could determine whether Russia would shell Donbas that day. I learned to anticipate how a carelessly spoken phrase by a politician or official might trigger escalation, and I knew exactly what needed to be said to give the residents of Donbas at least a relatively calm day. Public relations focused on militarization is both cheap and dangerous. Moreover, it often fails to resonate with parts of society and instead breeds distrust toward politicians, who come to be seen as those who are actively inviting threats. If the goal is to build a strong army, this should be done through professional bureaucratic and institutional tools. There is no need to constantly showcase advanced weapons or aggressively recruit for the army in public. There is no need to make war appear attractive. This approach, it seems, is what is dragging many current politicians down — and, more worryingly, it heightens the real risks of a war that far too many still view as something resembling a Hollywood movie.
