Nice to have worked on pushing energy communicates in the EU Clean Energy Package and see this a few years later: energypost.eu/eu-now-has-900… It's only getting started

Provisional ERA5 global temperature for 17th November from @CopernicusECMWF was 1.17°C above 1991-2020 - the warmest on record.
Our best estimate is that this was the first day when global temperature was more than 2°C above 1850-1900 (or pre-industrial) levels, at 2.06°C.

@Benj_Ray Had something similar a year ago; two fines, 1st for cycling through a red light and 2nd for not having an ID. I'm still sore about the 2nd one. likewise I showed bank cards and a photo of my passport but they still fined me.

@CColose If unsurprising, what's your estimate for the next El Niño? Over 2 degrees pre industrial before 2030?
Ukkel, België 🇧🇪 English

We do understand it. It’s a rather exceptional El Niño following multiple La Niña years, superimposed on a trend that will continue. There is no evidence of “surprises,” which actually is worrying enough.

We do understand the #globalwarming caused by fossil fuels - for four decades it’s been going as predicted. But we don’t understand the surprise upward leap that is happening now. And that worries me.

Its hard to overstate just how exceptionally high global temperatures are at the moment. They have blown past anything we've previously experienced by a huge margin.

Latest observations of global temperature change shown as a 'climate spiral' using monthly averages from January 1850 to June 2023. Uses @metoffice HadCRUT5 dataset, representing change relative to the 1850-1900 'pre-industrial' era.
