We still don't fully understand the gap between our results and bottom-up emissions inventories. This is important to resolve, because in order to accurately predict how mercury pollution will evolve in the future, we need to be able to understand past trends🏭💨🐠

Using biogeochemical models, we tested thousands of scenarios for how mercury emissions and sinks may have changed over 2005–2020. The most likely scenarios are that anthropogenic emissions have declined over this period, as other scenarios are unable to match observations.

Global emissions inventories, which estimate anthropogenic mercury emissions based on economic data of polluting activities, report *increasing* atmospheric emissions over this period. So we investigated whether these inventories could be compatible with the observed declines...

Had an awesome experience at the mercury conference (ICMGP) in South Africa. Great to meet (in person) so many familiar faces and make new connections with scientists working on mercury. Cape Point might also be the most beautiful site where atmospheric Hg is measured😉

Discussion paper out on our plan for a mercury model intercomparison project, MCHgMAP. This 171 (!) pager has a lot of useful review about the state of the art of mercury modelling and our ideas for how the models can support international policy like the Minamata Convention.
