Ever wonder why so many passionate gamers struggle to turn their love for esports into a sustainable career?
Here’s a harsh truth no one tells you.
Following the terrible experience we had in T2, I want to share my thoughts on how you can actually make your dream come true, working or competing in esports and making a living from it.
First, let’s get one thing straight. Despite our negative experience in T2 Valorant, "making it" in esports is absolutely possible (either as player, content creator, freelancer, org, or whatever ..)
You just need to be aware of a few key realities.
What I’m about to share applies to the entire esports and gaming ecosystem, not just Valorant.
First off, stop romanticizing esports. Nobody cares about your passion. I’m not making the rules, I’m just telling you how things are. It might sound harsh, but it's the truth. Most entities don’t care about your passion; they care about numbers and profits and what you can bring to the table.
Yes, making money is important. Bills have to be paid.
Although I truly believe you can combine competition, making money and performance with being a kind and respectful human being.
At @AcendClub, we prove that we work hard to succeed while treating our staff and players well.
Now, see yourself as an ASSET. The more you know and the more value you bring to the table, the more likely you are to land a job, a contract, or a deal. The more people will pay you a lot of money.
If your only focus is being good at the game and climbing the ranks, sure, that can work. But the problem is, you make yourself overly dependent on the developers investing in the scene - and that’s a HUGE GAMBLE.
We see what’s happening now in T2 Valorant (and it’s happened countless times in other titles too).
There are countless very talented players and teams, that deserve to be paid, but they won't (and they would be in different games). And they have not invested in anything but grinding the game.
You’re cracked, you meet the market standard, you deserve to be paid, but no org is willing to pay. So, you stay a free agent, hopping from one mix team to another, maybe working annoying side jobs just to survive. That’s the sad reality.
Once again, be an asset. Stream, learn editing, network, educate yourself, build small revenue streams, get sponsorship deals, hire a part-time editor. You won’t be able to do it all at once, but you have to start somewhere. There are endless ways to generate income.
It won’t be fast. Don’t expect to make a lot, if anything, when you first start streaming, uploading clips, or seeking sponsorship deals. It’s a grind, just like everything else.
AND you have enough time to grind the game, pursuing the dream of competing in esports for a living, WHILST you build yourself a safety net on the side.
(And again, feel free to join our Discord. We’re always happy to offer feedback and help with any questions.)
A lot of gamers are introverted, but that’s just an excuse. If you want to make a career in gaming, you need to step out of that comfort zone.
Yes, it sounds like a lot. But the best advice I can give you? Start somewhere. You will fail, and people might laugh at you. But this is YOUR CAREER, YOUR LIFE, so who cares?
People still laugh at me for playing dumb cards.
In the age of AI, you can create so much with so little effort. You can grind the game for 8 hours a day and still invest 1-2 hours in learning new skills or experimenting.
You can learn incredible skills from YouTube in days that a College won't teach you in 3 years.
Your esports career, even as a player, needs to be treated like running a business. A business has multiple responsibilities, and playing the game is just one of them.
So, TREAT it like a business. You’re the CEO of your own little company.
And as a business owner, you have to invest time and money to grow, often pivoting and adjusting.
And right now, it’s time to adjust.
In my career as a professional poker player and business owner, I had to adapt over and over again. I failed many times, but I managed to adjust to the markets, to trends, and to social media algorithms. It’s a constant process of change. But change provides opportunities.
Those who only focus on playing and shooting heads will have it very, very hard (unless you’re insanely good and top teams have no choice but to sign you. But let’s be real, how likely is that?).
Being good at a game MIGHT not be enough anymore.
Build up your character. Read books, take courses, watch videos on leading teams or resolving conflicts. There’s so much excellent material out there to help you grow.
When you grow as an asset, your value increases. You gain knowledge and experience to share, and you’ll resolve problems faster and better. (The best problem solvers are the ones who succeed.)
If you think you can sit in your room and play a game for 10 hours a day without developing your character, you will VERY LIKELY fail.
At the end of the day, behind every esport, behind every game, there are big investors who want to see returns. They don’t care if a gamer is passionate about the game.
Sure, you might think "I will just become very good".
I think you are being delusional of the current development of the scene.
Keep in mind, you make yourself extremely dependent to the game developers. What if they won't support Esports anymore? Or the eco system gets so bad, that despite you being an incredible player, there are not enough Orgs to pick you up and pay you? (As it happens with T2 Valorant right now).
You sacrificed years for almost nothing. You are the CEO of your own career.
Gaming & Esports has changed. It is not just about being good at a game anymore.
That’s the game. If you want to play, you have to follow the rules.
Feel free to join the Acend Discord if you’re new to the scene, want to break into esports, or have questions about growing your career (no matter what or where you work).
We got incredibly experienced and knowledgable people in our team, and we are happy to share more insights with you.
If you found value, I appreciate a like and a retweet.
Stay strong,
Ben

2-0 against @SissiStatePunks - ggwp!🫰
First map today made me some years older.
Insane mentality from the gurls to come back after being 11-3 down on Ascent attack side to winning 16-14 in OT.
Lets focus up for the last regular matchday next Tuesday.
