The gut feel one is so true. I told a former boss “I can’t explain it, but I have a bad feeling about them. I wouldn’t hire them if it was my company.” They hired them and a few months later they “accidentally” deleted a large portion of our production database, told no one, and then when caught took zero responsibility including emailing the entire company about it on his way out.

Few lessons I've learned on hiring: - It's my belief that you can't train grit or intellectual curiosity, so filter for these traits hard in your hiring process. People have it or they don't. - Every time I didn't trust a "weird feeling" I had about a candidate (positive or negative), I made a hiring mistake. The gut knows what the conscious mind cannot express. - Hire for attitude & passion so long as skill bar is met. Goes back to what is & isn't trainable in a person. - Hire for the second order effects they'll bring. This depends on level, but in higher-level roles, you want them annoyed that you're saying no to their growth ideas, not wondering why they're not coming up with any in the 1st place.

@RyanSacksRome @KevinEspiritu I like to ask about what aspects of their previous job challenged them, and how the overcame it. Or if they can think of a time when they failed, but kept going.

@KevinEspiritu You can get a feel for intellectual curiosity but I think it's pretty hard to suss out grit. Grit is proven on the field, not the interview

@whoisclydekelly @KevinEspiritu I believe so, yes. Too much passion can cause some bad judgement in people. Its definitely healthy for leaders to be challenged, but overly passionate people, especially in the arts, can become combative and start to mess with team dynamics.

I'm mostly driven by curiosity and self-competition. But every so often someone does something that fires me the fuck up, and I start activating revenge energy, which burns HOT I used to think this was bad, being fueled by pettiness or negativity at times. No longer. ONWARD

Few business lessons I've learned lately: - Copycats are a real threat in low moat businesses - When you're ahead, use your resources to STAY ahead - The right answer for how fast to drive pace is "Faster." - The price of fame is a loss of privacy, so you better be getting something in return for fame if you go down that path - You can never be too specific with your team members on deliverables, deadlines, and ownership. But you can be too vague - Push reversible decisions to team member with best info and ability to act, suck hard to reverse decisions up to leaders/CEO - No matter how many times you explain your vision / strategy / etc., it's still not enough times. Hammer it in over and over again - Business should be fun, sometimes Type 1 fun (fun in moment) sometimes Type 2 fun (fun in retrospect), it should rarely be NOT fun at all. If it is, there is an intrinsic motivation issue, extrinsic business model issue, or you're in the wrong role at your company a
