Digestate is a subproduct from anaerobic digestion. It's rich in minerals and elements essential for plant growth. However, it is often considered low-value In FENIX Project EU, we make digestates more valuable, by mixing them with biochar to formulate an amendment product.

FENIX is testing biochar–digestate mixtures across different soil types to evaluate their potential as soil amendments. We are also studying how biochars from pyrolysis affects anaerobic digestion, biomethane production, and plant growth. Stay tuned!

We had the pleasure of attending BIO360 on February 11 & 12 in Nantes, France. This year, FENIX shared space with @CIRAD, where François Pinta from @biowooeb was able to share the project with attendees. We’re thankful to everyone who stopped by!

We’ve analyzed soils from 3 test sites in southern Spain to determine how the soils’ physical, chemical, biological characteristics differ. The soils told us a story, and with that we’re painting a picture of how they’ll respond to our biochar-digestate mixture. More below!

Today and tomorrow, Inveniam is hosting the 6th General Assembly of the FENIX Project in Barcelona. The day will be filled with discussions about the project’s ongoing progress, as well as its trajectory over the next six months. We look forward to seeing you there!

Three of FENIX’s partners are conducting field tests with our biochar-digestate mixture. UGR, INRAE, and ELGO will collect soil samples, applying our biochar-digestate mixture to test how it affects soils’ nutrient composition, nutrient leaching and soil erosion. Stay tuned!
