Excited to publish our team's work in @jbiolchem which shows how ceramides can be recycled in muscle cells. Ceramide analogue C2-cer induces a loss in insulin sensitivity in muscle cells through the salvage/recycling pathway pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37178918/

@DanielJDrucker @PNASNews We published in 1989 a paper in the Biochemical J. (262, 881-886) showing in obese Zucker rat and using 2-DOG that the Hypoglycaemic effect of metformin results from an increased utilization of blood glucose by intestine. This was particularly true in hyperglycemic conditions.

Oh dear. Are you becoming a “what have the romans done for us?” Curmudgeon? I think people previously suffering terribly from diseases such asHep C, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis, IBD, a range of now curable cancers etc etc might have a different perspective on the “useful yield”
Paul Pharoah (R soul) 🇪🇺🇵🇬🇿🇦🇬🇧@paulpharoah

Given the climate disaster and the fairly low yield of useful output from biomedical science, should we pull the plug on the funding of most of the latter and vire it to research into the generation, storage and distribution of energy to replace fossil fuels?

@StephenORahilly @IMS_MRL Oxford is a great memory. I spent two years there as a postdoc in Krebs lab working with D.H Williamson, a wonderful biochemist and man, with meetings bringing together H Krebs, D. Williamson, P Randle and sometimes E Newsholme, with R Turner around. What an amazing environment!

Very much looking forward to going back to Oxford where I started doing diabetes research in 1984 with the wonderful and much missed Robert Turner. Honoured to be giving the Krebs lecture. Not something I ever thought I’d be doing way back then! @IMS_MRL

Sir Stephen O’Rahilly will deliver ‘Some adventures in hormones, metabolism and behaviour' in honour of Sir Hans Krebs, who first discovered the ‘Krebs Cycle’. Thu 9 June, 4pm, Blakemore Lecture Theatre, Sherrington building: bit.ly/3OVIwlU. @UniofOxford members welcome

@StephenORahilly Thanks Steve for your nice comment. The paper you mention got relatively unnoticed at the time but we were later glad to see that radiologists recommand to stop metformin for the detection of intestinal tumors by PET scan since it masks high glucose utilization by the tumor!

So nice to see this photo! . Just yesterday I tweeted about the beautiful 1989 BJ paper from you Jean and Luc Penicaud on metformin action on the intestine. Such an important piece of work and really key to understanding how oral metformin actually works.

Jean-Paul (right) and myself entered Jean Girard (left) ‘lab in 1975 and work with him for many years on metabolism during development. We have just celebrated our 80th and 70th birthdays together. Science can be such a humane and friendly adventure!
