Are you for real? You fully understand what I said but you’re just trying to be funny about it. If I take your argument seriously, let’s put it this way: Venezuela is reforming its most important laws (it’s an oil/extractive economy, hydrocarbons is like its constitution), and a few more. It isn’t just those three that you mention there. They’ve changed or have under discussion at least 7 laws that I can think off the top of my head in 6 months, with more coming. That’s pretty big.

Your exact original quote was “Venezuela is reforming just about every law and, most importantly, some practices.” I know you’re not a lawyer but do you really think hydrocarbons, mining & electricity are “just about every law”? Have you even lived in a system of laws?
Elias Ferrer@FerrerBreda

@ChrisSabatini Evidence of what? I’d actually like to have a normal conversation with you, because it’s absolutely hilarious that you would say “shilling for your funders.”

The hydrocarbons and mining laws have changed, just like the Supreme Court and the electricity ones are under discussion. I didn’t think I needed evidence because it’s something public, all over the media. The National Assembly has been discussing and approving these reforms every week since January. I thought you also knew. So first the drafts have been coming out, we’ve seen the diputados talk about them, and then they’re approved and put in a gaceta. Not as transparent as it should be, but it’s easy enough to see what’s going on. I would also ask that you take back that “shilling for your funders” phrase. You’re in a think tank, that’s literally your job. And those you imagine funded me probably just funded Chatham House, not me.

@FerrerBreda Evidence of all the laws you claim are being changed. Which ones? How? You can’t just say it.

Venezuela is reforming just about every law and, most importantly, some practices. The whole process is far from perfect, from any perspective. But there is no turning back. As we are seeing today, the Venezuelan military is clearing out mining areas of artisanal miners, making way for foreign companies. This was likely done in coordination with the US Armed Forces, which had sent their top generals to Caracas over the last few weeks. The National Assembly has already approved deep reforms to its oil, mining, and electricity laws, while it is even modifying its legislation on agriculture (coffee, cocoa). Venezuela is the largest market to open up to foreign capital in such a way since the fall of the Soviet bloc. Many foreign investors and journalists have asked me if I can feel the difference from last year. The reality is that right now, it's more about perception and expectations than cold, hard cash. But it is starting to trickle in, with more from oil sales and a first wave of investments. The key question is: will the Trump administration remove a government that is delivering on its agenda to the letter? And, if it doesn't, what happens after the US election in 2028?

A esa profesión te dedicas tú, no yo.

@DanielDiMartino Right, my agenda is not to remove the regime, it is to make money. Not lying though. I’m being pretty open and transparent about what I do, and what I stand for.

The Dems will probably try to start scrutinising everything, but Trump will still have executive power. If they win the presidency, it’s going to be a whole other game (for better or worse). Having said that, a Dem president will still want to use what Trump left them as leverage, like sanctions and licenses, and the system that sends money via the US Treasury.

Of course, we need to be careful about fake stuff coming out there too. Like when some created AI images of US soldiers in the area, or some videos that were taken in other countries.

Multiple reports now of Venezuelan military units clearing illegal mines, particularly in the gold-rich areas on the eastern fringe of Bolívar State. In recent weeks, the US chargé d'affaires and US generals had been speaking to the Venezuelan government about precisely this.

@FerrerBreda Antipatriota. Traidor.

Venezuela's monthly inflation was 6.3% in May, the lowest figure since October 2024. Though it has been cooling down since January, it still represents a high figure as the bolivar continues to depreciate. bcv.org.ve/notas-de-prens…
