Think cold weather stops bumblebees? Actually, they are well-adapted for cooler temperatures: 🧥 Their dense layer of hair helps keep them warm. 🥶 They can shiver to raise their body temperature. ❄️ They can even produce ‘antifreeze’ (glycerol) to help in colder conditions. Help us track spring by recording when you see bumblebees in our survey: buff.ly/kiXgzac #SignsofSpring

🐞 There are seven direct effects participants experience during, and immediately after, engaging in Field Studies Council experiences. One of the outcomes we actively facilitate is time in and connection to nature. 🦋 🍃 All our outdoor learning sessions actively facilitate nature connection. Through encouraging observation, noticing, and quiet reflection, we aim to encourage the development of an understanding of nature, its systems and interdependencies, its vulnerabilities, and our place within it. 🐸Nature connection is one of the seven outcomes delivered by our outdoor learning experiences. 🌱To find out more about our approach to learning please visit our website: buff.ly/1U9XqWd

Lawns don’t usually grow much over the winter but as we get into March many of us will be ready to tidy up our gardens. An early mow can benefit wildflowers hiding amongst the grass too. Before the first lawn cut of spring, you should make sure temperatures are at least 8-10 degrees, the lawn isn’t waterlogged, and there are signs of new growth in the grass. 🌱 Your first lawn cut is one of our ten indicators of spring. Tell us when you first get your lawnmower out this year! buff.ly/kiXgzac #SignsofSpring

At Field Studies Council, we know that science isn’t something you learn from a textbook, it’s something you experience, hands-on, with all your senses. As British Science Week draws to a close, we’re celebrating the power of fieldwork to build real scientific understanding. We are proud of all our learners, who build confidence and understanding in many ways, including: 🧪 Collecting and analysing data in real ecosystems 🌱 Applying techniques such as surveying habitats and identifying species 🌧 Observing natural processes like rivers, coasts, carbon cycles and water cycles 🏞 Exploring diverse environments at our UK-wide network of field centres Fieldwork gives young scientists the chance to ask questions, test ideas, and see the natural world in action, helping to build skills that stay with them far beyond the classroom. 👉 Explore fieldwork opportunities for schools: buff.ly/RsuqHrM

Every Field Studies Council experience delivers seven experience outcomes that underpin all our delivery across the organisation. Everything we do aims to increase environmental understanding. As young children we are fascinated by the world around us, but as we grow older many of us fall out of love with the outdoors and environmental understanding declines. As outdoor educators we challenge and engage children to see the complexity of nature and all interdependence through discovery-based learning. Environmental understanding is one of the outcomes delivered by our outdoor learning experiences. To find out more about our approach to learning please visit our website: buff.ly/1U9XqWd
