Don't overlook the cruel irony hidden in the Just Equations report on racial disparities in AP Calculus. Fewer blacks take Algebra I in 8th grade,many because they attend schools that don't offer it. Why? The detracking movement effectively eliminated options for acceleration in middle school.

Few know there was a Chinese immigrant teacher who did something just as extraordinary: For 20 years in the Arizona desert, he took the state’s poorest Indigenous, Latino, and Black middle schoolers — many with broken English and shattered foundations — and turned them into statewide champions. His name is Michael Xu. The “Sage from the East.” A man who survived China’s Cultural Revolution, hard labor in the jungle, lifelong dyslexia, and insomnia… yet became a legendary math teacher. Whenever I see outrage about education research, I'm always reminded of the IES study which found that the amount of training a teacher received in university had no detectable impact whatsoever on how much their pupils learned. In medicine that would be a scandal. The big difference between education and medicine is that medicine specifies exactly what a doctor must know. This study shows that teacher education only specifies how long the training is. Now... this was 17 years ago, are things much better now in teacher education? ies.ed.gov/ncee/2025/01/2…

Yesterday at the opening of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians, Wang Hong and Deng Yu, the 2007 PKU Cohort, received the Fields Medal — the first Chinese mathematicians to earn this distinction. Adding to this milestone, 14 PKU faculty and alumni have been invited to deliver lectures at this congress, setting a new record. The group includes faculty members Chen Songxi, Yuan Xinyi, Sun Xin, Xie Junyi, and alumni Zhu Yongchang, Xu Feng, Lu Jianfeng, Lin Lin, Deng Yu, Tang Yunqing, Wang Hong, Zhang Ruixiang, Shen Junliang, and Zhuang Ziquan. A true mathematical dialogue took centre stage.

Just Equations is an advocacy orginization, not engaged in quality research. Black students have not been excluded from AP classes; they were not adequately prepared. Fix that. Dear Utopians: Don't place struggling kids into classes that provide no benefit to them.

🧠 Why Don’t Students Like School? by Daniel Willingham is one of the most influential books for teachers on cognitive science. It explores how students’ minds work and how to use this knowledge to be a better teacher. Graduation rates inflated by credit recovery and lax grading practices are arguably the greatest scandal hiding in plain sight in American education. It doesn't help kids to deny them a diploma.
