This is a good article and this point is more critical than ever: "But if teachers are not taught explicitly about the connection between knowledge & critical thinking, some may leave with the impression that factual content matters less than it used to." chalkbeat.org/2026/05/28/ai-…

I think the opposite. Basic skills will increase in value because they are foundational to content knowledge in all domains. Basic skills have been declared "dead" many times over the past century--typically by ed progressives--but as the world grew more complex, and tech more able, the premium for knowledge increased.

University Professors Beg For Return Of Standardized Tests As Students Can’t Do Basic Math Hundreds of University of California (UC) faculty signed an open letter Tuesday demanding a return to mandatory mathematical standardized testing in college admissions.  The letter, now signed by over 550 STEM professors from various UC campuses, alerted the university president, Board of Regents and academic Senate of students’ failing performances in mathematical subjects, warning of “preparation gaps so severe that instructors must re-teach middle school mathematics.” The question is when School is in session are kids learning in California?

San Francisco banned middle school algebra only to bring it back a decade later. Colleges that did away with admissions exams are reinstating them, as more students need remedial courses. The experiment with lowering standards in American education was a dramatic failure.
San Francisco Chronicle@sfchronicle

More than five years after the UC system lifted its standardized testing requirement, a coalition led by UC Berkeley math professors argues the drop in students’ math levels is “severe.” sfchronicle.com/california/art…

A pencil is running for governor in Oregon, and voters are taking note. According to the Urban Institute's demographically adjusted National Assessment of Educational Progress scores, Oregon ranked last in the nation for fourth grade reading, despite National Center for Education Statistics showing rising education spending in the state over the last ten years. J. Schuberth launched a write-in campaign to spotlight the state's literacy crisis.

We can develop textbook-based-AI help. It can even nudge students to read textbooks. But dismiss the myth that knowledge is not necessary, and it suffices to develop the "art of prompts" Fantastic to deliver the closing keynote with T. Oates at the Oslo Ludenso Textbook Summit

Today I met one of Australia's most famous residents - John Sweller, the father of cognitive load theory. He's been studying cognitive load theory for 50 years and it's only become well-known in the last five years. It was great to meet him in person! (I personally do not think this is parka weather at all, but he wasn't the only one wearing a parka in Sydney.)

Why do ineffective education practices survive—even when evidence shows they don’t work? 📚 David Shuck and Thomas Briggs explain why education lacks the guardrails seen in fields like medicine, allowing ineffective trends and programs to keep returning. 🔗 Link below

As the school year comes to a close, a new analysis shines a harsh spotlight on what's being called a "learning recession" among American students. It's a problem that started long before the pandemic, according to the latest National Education Scorecard — an annual deep dive into data about kids in grades K-12. The findings of this report are sobering. Children had a steady decline in math and reading scores beginning all the way back to 2013, which happens to be when smartphones and social media really took off. Compared to a decade ago, math scores today are down in 70% of school districts. Reading scores are down in 83%. Scores have climbed a bit since 2022, but nowhere close to making up all the lost ground. In fact, 8th grade reading scores are now at their lowest level since 1990. @wmbrangham recently spoke with Thomas Kane, one of the authors of the scorecard and a professor at Harvard University.

Catherine Gewertz 2013 shows the incredible hubris of Common Core on full display. When teachers objected to the 50-50 split recommended for fiction and non-fiction, CCSS authors responded, "You won't need to drop literature if you just double the amount of assigned reading." Teachers followed false theories of literacy instruction because 30 years ago Alfie Kohn and a few other self-important progressives called accused phonics of being inflected with right-wing, Christina nationalism Diane Ravitch wants us to make the same mistake again

@NickGibbUK is traveling the world to meet education ministers and educators. His warning on the harm of progressive education needs to be heard: '...until I read books like E.D. Hirsch’s The Schools We Need and Why We Don’t Have Them, which explained intellectually and with crystal clarity what progressive education was about, where it came from, and why it was so damaging.' tes.com/magazine/analy… educationnext.org/what-american-… youtu.be/1uZkq2UhNx0?si…

Here's a little secret about education A small library. Pencils. Notebooks. A teacher. An administrator with the stones to enforce discipline No tech contracts. No one-to-one computing initiatives. No major building overhauls Effective education doesn't really require much $$
