A holy warrior in service of a deity, played totally straight, helping others along the way.
He goes to fight a dragon that he knows he cannot beat, only knowing that he must take a stand against evil.

@elvenmaidinn The demonic traits actually came before they were confirmed demon-touched. It was technically unknown but generally assumed based on their appearance. Ppl just know they aren't genasi or aasimar so must be demonic. They are actually so much more interesting than later iterations.

This is the real lack of knowledge about D&D History.
Tieflings in their conception were planar creatures, part humans, part something else.
Demonic traits came with Wizards of The Coast and D&D 3e.

People try to read it like it's an adventure story, this is because the Hobbit is an adventure story, and to a degree so is LOTR.
The Silmarillion is however, more akin to a fantasy history book, or a saga.
