That was the real planned evolution. • The big artwork is a non-official image showing how majestic that scrapped Pokémon could have looked. Fans even nicknamed it “Totartle,” but that name was never used by Game Freak. Game Freak scrapped the entire elegant wave-turtle design at the last minute and swapped in Blastoise because they wanted something more “epic” for a starter final form. The ultimate starter swap… and it happened right at the start of the franchise. Was this the right call, or would you have preferred the original scrapped evolution?
