How to Train Your Dragon isn’t the complete disaster I feared but it’s also a film desperately trying to justify its own existence. I love the original film and this is clearly a story that was designed for animation, so it’s awkward watching Dean DeBlois try to make his own film into a shot-for-shot live-action remake. I won’t pretend some of the charm isn’t here, but it’s never going to be the film I watch when I want to experience this story again. Live-action remakes rarely ever work because they don’t bring their own identity or anything new that justifies its existence outside of commercial profit, which this falls victim to unfortunately. The flying sequences are really cool and that John Powell score will never fail to give me goosebumps. I do get the appeal here for some people, but really this just makes me want to go back and watch the original again. The best compliment I can give is that it’s better than any of the Disney live-action remakes.

An underwhelming one, to say the least. Was expecting this one to be as fun as the previous installment, but it was rather boring. Boring characters, didn't focus on the, frankly boring, traps as much, but it still had a lot of the visuals and practical effects I love. 2.5/5
