I wonder if part of Nolan's problem is that he's become so obsessed with the technical parts--IMAX, no CGI, etc--he's lost sight of how to make a truly entertaining, inmersive film (see also Peter Jackson). That would certainly explain why such an epic film is so bland. 3/3

Usually directors will let a scene run if it's working well, or use rolling retakes to keep things spontaneous. If you only have 2-3 minutes before the film runs out, that has to add pressure. Not to mention how loud these cameras are. 2/

I wonder how much Nolan's obsession with shooting on IMAX film cameras affected The Odyssey? You only get 3 minutes of film, which means no long takes and forcing actors to pause in the middle of scenes. I wonder if that's why no one was giving their best performance here... 1/

What I will say about The Odyssey is that it's different. Not a superhero movie, not scifi, no CGI, not a tired franchise. Very different from the blockbusters we've had for the last 10 years. It's something of a novelty for audiences.

@FranBorrull_97 That's right. Both things can be true. Trailer making is an art. The trick is to tease just enough to get people interested; not too much to spoil the film.
