$META potential equity offering. Hard to spin this positively but presumably the company prefers issuing equity to going FCF negative. What this tells me is 1. Earnings growth can’t possibly fund this so it can’t be that good 2. Management see a lot of uncertainty in AI returns otherwise would have preferred debt 3. They haven’t hired banks and don’t have an anchor investor like $Googl 4. Meta can’t free itself from it’s belief that more spending is the answer (ie predictable as AW voiced in a recent interview). It may workout in the end but for the time being $META is uninvestable.

@TMTLongShort Forget decoupling with US bogged down in the ME. Lutnick is on his way out. Bessent eerily silent may be next. Trump’s 2nd term is unravelling.

What you have to understand is this is the scenario where we lose. Where decoupling fails. But the reason we are not likely to lose is because we are willing to walk away. It’s straightforward game theory. Because of the Vance isolationist faction the restructure and salvage the system faction (i.e. Bessent & Rubio) are empowered because they have a credible threat. I’ve been consistent. Not once has my tune changed since a year ago going into Liberation Day. Europe will not do what we want without pain. We cannot exert pain without Trump having a tolerance for lower equity markets. Having Japan and GCC capital can mitigate the pain. Xi will attempt to intervene and throw Europe a lifeline. Energy and dollar liquidity will be weaponized. American voters will be bribed into the midterms. Canada will be made an example of. The CIA will regime change who they can. Economic seppuku. It’s coming for Europe. I am many things….inconsistent isn’t one of them. Blitzkrieg 🫡

Europe is a vassal. They lack the political will to nuke their welfare state which is a requisite step in building a military sufficient to keep their borders secure. If the U.S. leaves it knows China is the default inheritor of the vassal. Because China is our primary adversary we will not leave Europe intact economically on our way out. We will rip away its access to energy. We will nuke its access to dollar liquidity and throw its existing over-indebted financial system into a tailspin. We will block Europes export access to any country in our sphere. That includes Japan. And most importantly we will fragment Europe on the way out. We will rip it apart from the inside. Not because we hate Europeans. We don’t. Because Europe is a vassal. A resource of empire. And just because it forgot this due to our benevolence doesn’t mean China will view it as anything other than a resource to extract from. And you don’t leave the enemy resources. You blow it the fuck up and leave a pair of star-spangled boxers in the wreckage on the way out. 🫡

Silly view.. evidence shows all sorts of investing styles can be profitable. There is no silver bullet. Lots of micro PMs killing it. Lots of macro PMs killing it. Then systematic, L/S, event driven, capital structure arb, credit RV, distressed etc.. There is a reason the industry is consolidating on a handful of players deploying all sorts of strategies at scale.

@sdav1986 I know this is your view but genuinely interested. What sort of investors do you hold in high regard? Market makers? Market neutral relative value? long only? stock pickers? Arbs?

It's impossible to know for sure to what extent AI was used in this last ME war intercourse. But given the ass kicking Iran gave to the US, if AI was employed it clearly didn't show positively at all.

Back from vacation and hopefully regular posting. During the market turmoil we added $RWE, $LNG, and a tiny of $BTU as we think coal will have a longer half-life after this crisis. We also shorted airliners and $HYG which helped us offset a lot of the losses in our AI infra basket. Good think we're out of memory ($EWY and $MU) prior to Feb 27 but we did experience losses on the other holdings ($CAT, $GWL, $COHR, others). On Friday we also bought short term rates in US and Germany as we think that (1) Fed won't raise rates so there is an asymmetry if crisis resolve, and (2) A lot has been priced in European rates. We did this via $SFRH7 and $DUM6. We got stopped out of $META but we kept our July CS at 710/750 (mostly derisked now) and yesterday we added a little bit of delta. Finally during the crisis we built a position on QQQ Dec 625/650 call spread. As the market heals the deltas there should restore some of the risk we reduced and more the make up for the losses. Lets see how the newsflows evolve and what the consensus for Trump speech at 9pmET builds. Depending on that I may reduce some of the hedges I still hold (short airliners, short $HYG).

GTC this and that… none of that matters in the short term. Markets are pretty much trading with oil, and as long as strait is closed any upside is limited and downside significant. Meanwhile the macro backdrop keeps getting worse.

So $META flop. We reduced half of our deltas in the AH yesterday before shares reacted. Our options will naturally derisk as I think this will cause the shares to selloff meaningfully. Yes we knew model wouldn’t be SOTA. But… article says it’s on par with Gemini 2.5. Not clear which Gemini (pro, flash?) but if model is as good as Gemini 2.5 as an open source they would most likely release it. So why they don’t release it?? Cuz it’s probably worse than Gemini 2.5. It’s a flop and not releasing is a rational reaction to avoid the Behemoth fiasco last year. $META AI effort is very costly and is not working. Should Zuck decide to ditch its foundational model efforts (and eg license gemini 3.5) and as a result scale back its capex ambitions then maybe I go back to own the shares meaningfully.

This is what I wrote on my weekly: Given all of the above, I still maintain that Trump is constrained and my expectation is he will wrap this up sooner rather than later. Here is why: Politically the war is very unpopular within the broader population but specially within Trump’s MAGA base. This look a lot like the beginnings of forever wars like Iraq which Trump campaigned very much against. Although the GOP is likely to lose the House in the midterms, the Senate is not a given, but the way things are going it looks like Trump may lose the Senate. For instance polymarket put the odds at almost even. This would be a disaster for Trump and he could even be impeached. If oil prices continue to increase there will be demand destruction and there could be recession as a result. The economy is already in a fragile state with the labor market barely growing. It doesn’t take much to tip it into recession. Two important nodes in the AI race are very much affected by this: Taiwan and South Korea. In the context of AI competition with China the last thing the administration would want is to handicap their companies on chips and memory. If this continue there could be adverse consequences there.

Wow what a week... sorry for not posting but market has been consuming all my energy. Here is what I'm thinking: * Just like after liberation day, Trump has constraints here. Namely, gasoline prices and midterms, ammunition depletion, ground troops (pretty sure he loses MAGA if he does that), falling off of favor with Asian allies, and AI race (Taiwan/South Korea, investments from the gulf countries * The ECB is clearly allowing the market to shift to a raising rates stance in monetary policy. It seems far fetched now, but remember developed markets tend to move in tandem. While no one is talking about the Fed raising rates that can change pretty rapidly * A lot happened in AI this week during MS conference. Notably to me is that the exponential that Jensen keeps talking about in the eps call is clearly happening. If you have any doubt just look at Anthropic at a 19bi run rate from 9bi end of 2025. This is staggering!!! * The doubts about optics are silly. META didn't do a $6bi deal with Corning for nothing. It's real. Google is deploying it at scale * Similarly... forget the DRAM/SRAM debate. All sorts of memory are in demand, although I am almost out of memory holding only a tiny bit of SK which I reduced further this week. * If not for the war in Iran this would have been a pretty bullish week. But the war is there and hard to see how it ends.. and also increasingly this may have ramifications for years to come. I'm thinking a lot in terms of regime change as a result of that. Will have more to say in the weekly * My base case still the same... still think Trump does a TACO at some point maybe in the next 2 weeks and spin some kind of victory. IF you look at what Trump/Rubio has been saying, it feels to me they're laying the ground for that. That's it for now... brutal week, but we're surviving.

If US/Israel back out now, you’ll have a new Iran, bold, with a hardliner religious leader who will no doubt go nuclear. They can’t back down unless they’re sure that Iran nuclear program is set back decades.

Can't say much with respect to the conflict. A lot of noise, propaganda and fake news all over. As it looks, Iran is angry and command not centralized which means risk of an accident is greater. Trump has lots of exit strategies here. He already got the big prize. A lot will depend on oil prices and market reaction.

Would do you good to actually read the terms of the deal before forming an opinion. $AMZN is on the hook for $15bi. The extra $35bi is contingent upon milestones (including additional funding or IPO) up to Dec 2028. Also second tranche happens at OAI valuation today (series C) so should OAI be successful $AMZN will get another chunk of the company at a discount. Plus… AMZN gets to have a frontier lab install 2GW of trainium (proof of concept) and also $AMZN gets to use OAI customized models in Alexa, Rufus etc. Last but not least, should OAI continue to grow, AMZN AWS has $100bi of cloud demand for the next 8yrs. If you think this is a bad deal I’m curious how you would amend this deal in a commercially reasonable manner to make it appealing?
