Finland in Palestine

Finland firmly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances. Israel’s approval of the Death Penalty Bill marks a troubling reversal of its past position — one that has set an important example in the region. We urge Israel to uphold its commitments under international law.

#Israel: Statement by the Spokesperson on the Death Penalty Bill The Death Penalty Bill approved by the security committee of the Israeli Parliament is deeply concerning. The European Union opposes capital punishment in all cases and under all circumstances.

3/3 We call upon Israeli authorities to prevent and prosecute the lethal violence, raids and attacks. Israel has an obligation as the occupying power to protect Palestinian communities.

2/3 We are especially appalled by the killings of Palestinians over these past weeks. This violence by settler militias, aimed at taking over land and creating a coercive environment, forcing Palestinians to leave their homes, must end.

We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of four Palestinian women, of which one was pregnant, in Beit Awwa in the West Bank as a result of debris from a missile. Our thoughts are with their families. Civilians must never pay the price of escalating violence.

Always a pleasure to meet the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, today in Geneva. We talked of the progress and possibilities that the UN80 initiative can bring with it. Finland supports the mainstreaming of human rights through the Human Rights Group. We also discussed the development of technology and AI and their impact on foreign and security policy, particularly on the furtherance of human rights. AI brings new opportunities but also poses threats to individual rights and democracy that we must be aware of and react to.

Foreign Minister @elinavaltonen met today with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights @volkerturk to discuss the central role of human rights in all efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts.

Kestävät ratkaisut löytyvät vain diplomatian, neuvottelujen ja kansainvälisen oikeuden kautta. Iran on omilla aiemmilla toimillaan heikentänyt alueen vakautta. Sen on sitouduttava vilpittömiin neuvotteluihin ydinohjelmaansa liittyen. Samalla ihmisoikeuksien kunnioittaminen ja tavallisten iranilaisten oikeus turvalliseen tulevaisuuteen on turvattava. Recent events in the Middle East are deeply worrying. Ensuring nuclear safety and long-term security in the region is of utmost importance to all of us. We continue to support all diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Iran's nuclear program and strengthening security in the region. The Iranian regime must engage in negotiations in good faith and stop its destabilising activities. We condemn all actions that seek to escalate the conflict in the region and urge for utmost restraint.

In High Level Session of #HRC61 @jukka_salovaara stressed that the universality of human rights is the foundation of global security. When rights erode in one place, stability is weakened everywhere. The Human Rights Council plays a vital role in protecting these principles.

3/3 It is high time for justice and we call on Israeli authorities to act in accordance with their responsibilities as the occupying power.
