When I was 13 I partook in DBZ vs Naruto "fan wars" that were at worst immature teasing. Compare that now to fandoms full of psychos sending death threats, political zealots, groomers etc.

I'm not saying the internet was some ultra wholesome hugbox, I saw fucked up shit a couple of times. But for the most part you could avoid it if you wanted to. What's different now is that the normal fun side of the internet is now few and far between.
