My sophomore year, my coach - the great Norm Persin - told 15 year old me I “couldn’t guard a fucking snowman with no arms” in the middle of a game and broke his marker he was bashing it so hard on the clipboard as he screamed it into my face. I went on to be a 2x top 100 underclassmen showcase invitee, 2x all state, district player of the year, etc. after that moment. Yeah, I think kids could probably use a little more of this kind of coaching.

Ledger is holding a knife to Gyllenhaal's face telling a fake story about his scars. Gyllenhaal couldn't maintain eye contact. She was genuinely trying to pull away from him. She was silently looking at Nolan to stop the scene. Ledger saw her break eye contact and improvised the line "Look at me." Four syllables that turned a scripted scene into something nobody on set could control. Michael Caine forgot his lines the first time he saw Ledger in full Joker. A 75-year-old actor with 130 films on his résumé, and his brain locked up. Caine wrote in his memoir last year that Ledger was "a lovely guy, very gentle and unassuming" between takes. Skateboarded around set. Then the camera turned on and everyone on the crew froze. The film made $1 billion. Ledger won a posthumous Oscar, only the second actor in history to do so. There's a lesson here. A lot of people were questioning Clingan after a shaky rookie year. For solid reason. But now? Now, there is growing hype around the offensive rebounding machine who is providing massive value at both ends of the floor. We (the press, Twitter, fans, ball knowers) need more patience. You can't bury (or crown) a guy after one season. You need a summer or two of off-season training, of body development, of mental adjustments. I know because I lived it. Year 1: I barely played Year 2: I earned more PT than coach told me he planned on giving me Year 3: They decided I would be the guy going forward If you only saw my Year 1 numbers -- or Clingan's -- you would've assumed short careers. But you didn't know the adjustments we'd make, the work we'd put in, or the confidence we'd build. That was my truth. That was his truth. And we're not the only ones.
