Yes, because it would have needed to be a complete cultural deconstruction of the south, slave owners should have had all of their assets stripped (if not outright killed), and like you said deconstruction the political power structure. The southerners were secessionist traitors that dealt in one of the worst human atrocities in the history of our species. Reeducation should have been literally the merciful option.

Was slavery and vitriolic racism okay? Would the entirety of the American life not be better if the south were brought to heel during reconstruction? Or if during denaziification actually rooted out the fascists from Europe we wouldn’t have the risk of the same thing happening Today. I don’t want to send your racist uncle to get an education, I want people who are proven to be a part of a hate group that has historically committed violence or large scale intimidation based on race. If I wanted to act the same, I’d say I’d want them dead, but I don’t. I truly believe that most people are just severely misinformed and taught to hate. If reeducation was utilized during American reconstruction or during the denazification of Europe we’d have a whole lot less Nazis today.
