I’m a low maintenance friend. I can go for months or years without talking to someone and still love them as much as I did the day I last saw them. But I also make a point to respond to my friends when they message me. Maybe not the same day if my battery is cooked. But definitely within a day or two at most unless I’m sick or dying or not connected to the internet or some other valid trauma. And if my friends want to spend time with me, I will find time for them where I can. It might not be today. Or the weekend. It might be next week and if something comes up I’ll reschedule. But if I say I like someone and consider them my friend and -want to spend time with them-, I will -find the time-. I don’t wait weeks or months to respond constantly. I don’t brush people off on finding time to spend with them. I find time. Not always straight away but as soon as I’m capable. That’s the difference between a low maintenance friend and a shitty absent friend. Because if you never have time for someone even when they’re clearly putting in the effort to make time for you, you don’t see them as a friend. And you should tell them as much so they stop wasting time on you. (Not a targeted post. I used to be an absent friend so I know how it makes people feel. I had to learn to suck less in order to be a better friend to people I love and it makes me very aggressive about knowing the difference between ‘low maintenance’ and ‘absent’.)
