If you have a sample ready for fluid preservation, here's some advice on how to do it properly. And that alcohol doesn't have to be the only option. 🐞👉🧪

Good news everyone. No more guessing or rumors about the methods of larval storage. We have hard data on how long term storage affects DNA quality and morphology thanks to @FireflyerMartin , @karo_mahlerova,@SantiagoMonto20 and Jarin Qubaiova academic.oup.com/jme/article/do…

Presenting how to preserve your larval specimens to use them (not only) as criminal evidence later. In a beautiful city of @Liverpool attending #EAB2021.

@KwakWack Yes, in most species the adults are just sex machines, to use Lynn Faust's lovely expression. The glowing in larvae is considered to be mainly for the purpose of aposematic defence.

@FireflyerMartin Oh interesting, so I guess the adults only live to reproduce? Why would the larvae light up at night?

@KwakWack These are firefly larvae and they are predatory. Adults of most species do not feed anymore. The most common prey are snails and earthowrms.

@FireflyerMartin I have two questions : What do fireflies eat? These don't fly, do they?

Taking ventral images of beetles is very important, as one can spot many interesting, and sometimes crucial traits. Here is an example of a ventral side of Catops joffrei (Coleoptera: Leiodidae).
