I was thinking about this after watching the video of the Jigawa State Governor visiting the state secretariat, only to find many offices empty.
Beyond the issue of low wages, we also have to confront the productivity problem in Nigeria’s civil service. You can’t consistently demand more while delivering less. Yes, the country is difficult, but why are some offices still empty by 11:00 a.m. when many private-sector workers in Lagos have been awake since 5:00 a.m. just to make it to work by 8:00?
The civil service is also bloated, with too many redundant ministries, departments and agencies. Limited public resources are spread across too many people, including roles that add little value. In some cases, pension obligations aren’t even fully contributory, increasing the burden on government finances. Reform has to be about both better pay and better performance.

I’ve heard this story from Nigerian founders so many times.
When FKO started M1, the thesis was simple: if the infrastructure existed, people would use it. So they laid the submarine cable, landed it in Nigeria, and built multiple PoPs.
The problem? Demand didn’t come as quickly as expected.
ISPs weren’t buying enough traffic, so M1 couldn’t just be an infrastructure company. They had to move up the stack, building last-mile connectivity, metro fiber, and serving enterprises directly.
