Just saw The Odyssey. Despite what you may have heard, literally all of the criticisms by conservatives were entirely correct. The movie is just as woke as you fear, if not more so. The DEI casting is atrocious. Completely takes you out of the story right from the beginning. But even worse than that is Nolan’s decision to turn Odysseus into an anachronistic whiney, solemn shell of a man plagued by “trauma” and guilt. It’s impossible to overlook these flaws because the film itself is not terribly entertaining or well constructed. For the most part it is disjointed, dull, self-serious, disenchanted, somehow feeling both verbose and overly rushed at the same time. The dialogue is some of the worst I’ve ever heard in a “critically acclaimed” film. “On the nose” and “clunky” are descriptions that can’t even begin to describe this script. At no point in the story does Nolan ever transport the audience to the ancient world. You never feel like you’re 3,000 years in the past. You feel like you’re watching modern Americans put on a pageant, because you are. Nobody would be calling this thing a masterpiece if it was made by a director not named Christopher Nolan.

Wrong. My definition is not circular. And once again, you are putting words in my mouth. I never said it's bad simply because it's diversity casting. I explicitly explained that intentionally discarding culturally rooted physical descriptions, which Homer used as visual proof of elite status, destroys the historical and textual reality of the ancient Greek setting. Your ridiculous lack of integrity is showing. But you also just proved my point. If Homer didn't explicitly describe Eurylochus with a physical marker like white-armed, then his casting doesn't blatantly contradict the text. My issue is with a studio deliberately ignoring the source material when it actually gives us explicit physical realities to follow.

You’re saying “Casting a black person in a role specifically described as white is bad because it’s diversity casting.” I haven’t heard an explanation why that particular deviation destroys the source’s intent or why other deviations don’t bother you.

But why aren’t other characters described that way? Any idea what the “source material’s” intent is with that description?

Translating the dialogue into English so the audience can actually understand what's being said is a practical necessity for making a movie; deliberately changing explicit physical character descriptions to push a modern ideology is not. Your comparison is not equivalent and quite ridiculous.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely believe you're just the right amount of stupid to believe that. But I hate to break it to you clown. When a studio names a movie "The Odyssey," the expectation is that they actually follow the source material. But they deliberately deviated from the explicit physical descriptions just to push some bullshit ideology. You're race-baiting like a little bitch because either you lack the reading comprehension to understand the original text, or you're entirely devoid of integrity. If that’s what you were truly worried about, you’d be complaining about it not being scripted in Greek and following the original poem exactly. But you’re not. @MattWalshBlog DEI cast? So you’re upset they didn’t select real Greeks and real demigods and heroes for the roles? Or is it about a trans actor being in the film. If so, and if you really understood who that character is, you’d understand that casting decision was subversive to trans ideology.
