We would suggest that the conflict of the last 150 years has been an expression of the extreme underlying psychological ‘upset’ of the human condition. Certainly, this conflict has compounded the upset (and destroyed innocence, soundness), but it is not the fundamental cause. Importantly, Griffith argues that ‘war’ is not innately hard-wired into our nature (instincts); rather, it is psychologically derived and therefore is healable. We needed to make sense of our anger, egocentrism, and alienation—compassionately redeem us—in order to end the madness. Prof. Prosen was a professor of psychiatry who worked in the field for over 60 years, including chairing two departments of psychiatry and serving as president of the Canadian Psychiatric Association. We share very different opinions on the matter. As a Christian, I see the human condition as spirit…not science. It’s a matter of the heart, the spirit, the soul. Science has no bearing on these. Good and evil are spiritual matters. Nothing against science, it has its place.

Hi Paige, we certainly respect people’s religious views and Jeremy Griffith’s explanation of the human condition doesn’t actually contradict a belief in God or Christianity. It simply brings biological understanding to all those pre-scientific concepts. In fact, Jeremy considers the Bible to be a repository of extremely rare denial-free truth about human life albeit from that pre-scientific view. In dealing with such a historically difficult subject for us humans, these biological explanations of the human condition are, by nature, very confronting and although ultimately represent a fulfilment of religion (as explained in our FAQs about religion), they do demystify religious concepts which some people can find very challenging, so we encourage everyone to take their time investigating what’s being presented.
