WHO IS SALEH ASHAKA?
The Nigerian media world lost a gem yesterday. Veteran journalist and former Voice of America (VOA) Hausa Service correspondent Saleh Shehu Ashaka (@AshakaSaleh
) passed away on Sunday, May 3, 2026, after a brave battle with a prolonged illness. He was 42.
A voice of reason, a mentor, and a kind soul who always pushed others to do better. Let’s remember his remarkable life. 2/10
Born on July 26, 1983, in Plateau State, Northern Nigeria, Saleh grew up in a region that shaped his deep understanding of its people, challenges, and aspirations. He attended Federal Government College Jos (FGC Jos), where he formed lifelong bonds with classmates who later spoke of his generosity—even while battling illness.
Saleh built a distinguished career spanning decades in journalism. He served as a key correspondent for VOA Hausa in Abuja, covering Nigerian politics, security, governance, anti-corruption efforts, and national development with honesty and insight. He also contributed sharp opinion pieces to platforms like Daily Nigerian and ThisDay.
On X (formerly Twitter), where he had over 51,000 followers, Saleh was more than a reporter—he was a commentator who spoke truth to power. His posts blended professionalism with warmth, and he often encouraged younger voices to grow beyond noise-making into meaningful impact.
What many admired most was his humanity. Friends described him as the “life of every space,” someone who randomly called to share achievements, laugh, or offer guidance. He bought property in Dubai and excitedly showed it off to close ones. He mentored, inspired, and treated people like family.
His health journey was one of courage and reflection. Saleh had been battling cancer for some time (a close friend revealed he confided about it over a year earlier). In late 2025, he even wrote a powerful piece titled “Officially I am back to work!!” on Politics Digest, sharing lessons from his illness and vowing to encourage others facing similar battles.
Despite the pain, he kept working and staying positive. When his condition worsened, he traveled to Cairo, Egypt, for advanced treatment. Sadly, he was admitted to the ICU and passed away there. Even in his final months, tributes note he remained helpful to old schoolmates and full of life.
He leaves behind two wives and one child. The outpouring of grief from journalists, politicians, and everyday Nigerians shows the depth of his impact—colleagues called him a “quintessential intellectual journalist,” a brother, and a mentor who believed in others’ potential.
Saleh’s legacy? A commitment to truthful journalism in challenging times, a heart that lifted others, and a reminder that life is short—“There is only one thing certain in life: Death!” (his own words from a 2024 post). May his work continue to inspire the next generation of reporters.
Rest in perfect peace, Alhaji Saleh Shehu Ashaka. May Allah grant you Jannatul Firdaus and comfort your family. Ameen.
