@ClassicMASH Lieutenant, you're bending the book. (And another thought: There are nurses' quarters. But in episodes where nurses figure in a romantic plot (here, "Local Indigenous Personnel," etc.), the individual nurses seem to have their own tent for one.)

For those who claim that PBS was "forced" to make a "patriotic show" yesterday: PBS has aired the National Memorial Day Concert since 1989 and A Capitol Fourth (July 4) since the early 1980s. So where have the accusers been all those years?

@servicerotties It's great to read your descriptions of Kenji's learning processes, Marla, and how you teach him. I work as an education guide at an animal sanctuary, so I know how sensitive they are to noises such as trucks or airplanes overhead. Glad for the work you're doing with Kenji!

This weekend the winter tires came off the van. Baby rottie Kenji came along so he could experience the smells, sights, and most importantly, the loud sounds in the shop. Dog training isn't just teaching the dog behaviors. It's also conditioning emotional responses to situations and stimuli. It's much easier to build positive associations when something potentially scary or stressful is first introduced than it is to counter condition negative emotions already established. Rottweilers are typically pretty confident dogs but the hissing of the air tools, the chugging sound and vibration of the compressor, and the sudden hammering of the impact wrench are all suspicious and a bit startling. We don't want him to grow up to be 125 pounds of muscle that panics at loud noises so we strategically use food, play, and lots of affection to develop positive associations. The impact tool makes its strange rapid fire noise for a few seconds, then as soon as it stops, food drops to the floor and Kenji immediately starts scarfing it down. He looks up quickly as the sound happens again, and this time before it even stops, more food falls to the floor. It only takes a few repetitions and as soon as he hears the noise, he looks up and is waiting for the food drop. The startling hammer sound has now become a predictor of a snack. Instead of it being scary, he views it as the sound of a mysterious food dispenser being activated. The same pattern can be done with a toy. The loud noise can become the predictor of the ball being tossed. He's allowed to sniff the air compressor hose and gets treats and lots of cuddles from the man operating it. He sees the human handling it as it makes it's strange hissing noise. They don't show signs of fear or act strangely. He decides it's not a threat. By the time the van is done, he's happily laying on the floor getting a belly rub and isn't concerned about anything other than making sure if he hears the mysterious treat dispenser, he doesn't miss anything. In situations like this he isn't asked to stay in a down or perform any other skills. If it was just a new environment we could build confidence by having him do tricks, position changes or other skills and rewarding him well. But the additional stressors of loud, unknown sounds changes our training approach. Asking him to do a behavior when he's likely to be startled by a strange sound is only setting him up for failure. Either he doesn't get the reward and that just adds to the stress, or he gets the treat and we're reinforcing that he doesn't need to do the behavior properly when asked. Instead we don't focus on skills and behaviors, and we focus on the emotions. Once he's more comfortable with noise, then we can ask for those behaviors, and he gets the "win" by earning rewards for doing them well, and those wins build his self confidence.

Bear’s 🇨🇦 #FunFact: About 45 minutes east of Thunder Bay #Ontario you’ll find Canada’s longest suspension footbridge…the Eagle Canyon Suspension Bridge! Built in 2006, it spans 183 metres (600 feet) across and 46 metres (150 feet) above ground. Imagine doing zoomies across 😬
