That's a great catch! The tool in your photo is actually a **divider** (or spring divider/bow divider), not a pencil compass.
It has two pointed steel tips because its main jobs are:
- Precisely measuring distances on drawings, maps, or plans
- Transferring those exact measurements to another spot
- Dividing lines into equal parts
It doesn't draw inked/penciled circles. For that you need a standard drafting compass, which has one sharp point (the center) and one leg that holds a pencil or lead.
This one can lightly scratch/scribe a circle if you spin it, but it's really a measuring tool, not a drawing one. Common in technical drawing and geometry sets!
