I was married to an oral surgeon. I used to run his office. It’s incredibly difficult to know which dentists you can trust. Often the ones with the fanciest offices and the best chairside manner are the ones guilty of over treating. In contrast, the old guy in an outdated office can be a far better practitioner. The reality is that unless you’re in the dental field, you really have no way of judging the quality of another dentist’s work.

Always get a 2nd dental opinion. Years ago one told us that one of our kids had multiple cavities that needed fillings ASAP. I told my wife to leave for a second opinion. Next dentist said there were absolutely ZERO cavities. Some of the dentists out there are total scammers.

Or if you don’t trust them then just find another because that will not go over well with most Dentists to be honest. Sure ask if they can show them to you on an X-ray (not all can be seen that way depending on location and size) or an oral cam. If they aren’t willing to do that then run. Why not have an open honest dialogue with them 🤷. The larger concern for patients should be the over treatment planning of crowns which is a much larger revenue source than time consuming far lower paying filings. TBH in many of your large DMOs if a Doc recommends too many fillings for patients instead of crowns they will get put on the hot seat. Bottom line, there are good ethical Dentists out there, don’t approach them as a con artist, share an honest dialogue and if you don’t feel comfortable with them (they refuse to explain treatments or diagnosis) then find another.

@robbystarbuck @LarrysNana 100%. One trick is to act like you have a family member who’s a dentist and ask them to email you the treatment plan and photos so that you can run it by your family member. It keeps them ethical.
