Eight hours of work at America’s federal minimum wage no longer covers a single tank of gas. That’s not an exaggeration. That’s the reality millions are living right now. Gas prices have exploded nationwide, averaging around $4.55 a gallon after the Iran conflict and the Strait of Hormuz crisis sent oil markets into chaos. In states like California, prices climbed above $6 a gallon. Washington and Hawaii are not far behind. Meanwhile, the federal minimum wage is still stuck at $7.25 an hour — exactly where it was back in 2009. Seventeen years without a raise while rent, groceries, healthcare, and fuel keep soaring. Work a full eight-hour shift at minimum wage and you make about $58 before taxes. Filling a standard 15-gallon tank now costs nearly $70. People literally cannot afford the gas needed to get to the jobs paying them poverty wages. A full-time minimum wage worker earns less than the federal poverty line itself. Think about how insane that is. The wage originally created to keep Americans out of poverty now guarantees they stay trapped inside it. And inflation keeps making it worse. That $7.25 has lost massive value over the years. If wages had actually kept pace with worker productivity, the minimum wage would be over $22 an hour today. Yet millions of workers are still expected to survive on scraps while politicians approve endless military spending without hesitation. The people suffering most are the workers who cannot “work from home.” The warehouse worker driving 40 minutes each way. The caregiver traveling between clients. The restaurant employee commuting before sunrise. The people keeping the country running while getting crushed by the cost of simply existing. Americans were told that if they worked hard, played by the rules, and showed up every day, they could build a decent life. That promise has been destroyed piece by piece while the people in power do nothing but offer excuses. This is not an economy built for working people anymore.
