@Exalted_Speed I'm about to say the quiet part out loud: it's the same reason women's sports don't thrive like the male ones do. The success seems to be dependent on men engaging with it. Why? If women were supporting shojo the way men support shonen it would be far bigger already.

In general I think a big factor in my view is that shojo manga never was able to find a great marketing machine like the shonen jump manga did, its might sound weird but I do think it clear culture makes a lot of nerds into it compared to say beat mixing various magazines
