In this whole conversation, we need to talk about Impressions as well. When a video gets more watch time through retention, it shows the algorithm that the viewer was probably happy with what they saw. Employees at YouTube have already said that satisfaction is also important, which directly derived from both the click and satisfying that click. When a video is really good, it gets then shown to more people (aka more impressions) than a video that wasn't good. This in turn will lead to potentially more views, so saying that retention doesn't matter is just not true. I would guess that you're not trying to say that the experience of watching isn't important and that you're mostly talking about how retention metrics like AVP and views are related. In that case, you're bringing up an important point. But the words used in this conversation don't make it sound like that. There are too many ways to take it wrong.
