They let me in the building to watch basketball & write about the Clippers (+ other stuff). It's pretty cool. | Business Inquiries: [email protected]

Mentioned it a while ago, but I’ve moved over to Substack. You can catch all my comings and goings over there. Give it a follow (or read, or whatever) if you’re at all interested in Clippers content and other random musings. Greatly appreciate all of you. justinrusso.substack.com

The LA Sparks ended their preseason campaign with a 2-0 record thanks to their win over the Portland Fire on Sunday night. We saw Nneka Ogwumike on the floor, a free-flowing offense, and a productive starting lineup. Now, it’s time for the regular season. 🔗LINK BELOW!!👇👇

The Los Angeles Sparks ended preseason with 85.5% of their baskets (47 of 55) being assisted. Last regular season, only 67.5% of their baskets were assisted. The league-leading New York Liberty clocked in at 73.7%. Something to keep an eye on going into the regular season.

Final: Sparks 85, Fire 75. Sparks end preseason 2-0. Starting lineup was good, Nneka Ogwumike scored 17, and the Sparks’ defense looked connected and in tune. Regular season starts next Sunday, Mother’s Day, with a visit from the reigning champs, the Las Vegas Aces.

Hey, we have a preseason tech on Lynne Roberts. Only Tyler Marsh had more last season among WNBA coaches. Roberts, clearly, was not thrilled with the refs.

Sparks led by as much as 23 a few minutes into the third and by 21 late in that same quarter. But the lead is down to 12 with just over 7 minutes to go. It’s been, as you would expect in a preseason finale, an extended look at the bench players during this time.

Sparks lead Fire, 72-54, after three quarters. Nneka Ogwumike leads with 17 points. Dearica Hamby and Kelsey Plum with 13 apiece. Rae Burrell is a game-high +24. Biggest thing to watch in the fourth is to see which bench players can cement rotation spots.

Rae Burrell took a bit of knee-to-knee contact trying to get over the top of a screen and fell hard onto the floor. Burrell got up and tried to walk it off before sitting on the bench after the Sparks called a timeout. Burrell is staying in the game. She’s a +23 in 15 minutes.

Sparks lead Fire, 48-32, at halftime. The defense has been quite good, forcing 12 Portland turnovers. The offense has had its moments. Kelsey Plum leads the way with 13 points. Nneka Ogwumike and Dearica Hamby each have 11. Starting lineup has done a quality job.

Portland’s aggressive trapping has caused the Sparks some issues. After 20 turnovers last Saturday in their preseason opener, the Sparks had 5 and shot just 5-for-17 in the opening quarter tonight. But they lead 19-9. Held the Fire to 4-for-13 shooting and forced 8 turnovers.

Been a really good start for the Sparks, especially on defensive end. It should be mentioned that Kelsey Plum is showing a pretty high level of verve in getting through screens and being a pest against ball-handlers. Sparks just 4-for-11 but forced 6 turnovers. They lead 13-4.

Portland Fire dubbing their homecourt “The Fire Pit” is pretty damn cool. Incredible understanding of the moment afforded them.

Lynne Roberts tonight: “I think starting is a much bigger deal to fans than it is to winning. As a coach, it’s not just about who starts, it’s about the rotation and how you can keep momentum going. … She’s gonna play a ton and she’s gonna be a huge piece for us.”

🚨NEW: Lynne Roberts’ comment about Cameron Brink coming off the bench made headlines, but context matters: the LA Sparks believe in Brink, so much so as to take pressure off of her. More from media day on the starting lineup that appears to be taking shape: 🔗LINK BELOW!!👇👇

Well, Orlando, it was a good run. But blowing a 3-1 series lead to the same team within the last 20 or so years has to be up there in the pantheon of sports heartbreaks. I feel for you.

@nashz84 No. But mainly because he never took 50 in a single series. Closest he came was 49 (26.5%).

Jalen Suggs is shooting 25% on 52 3PA in this first-round series. If this holds, he’d have the 5th instance in history of a player attempting at least that many 3s and shooting that poorly (or worse) on them in a single series.

On the one hand I just want this madness to end. On the other I don’t want the last image of the Magic’s season being another 3-1 collapse. I’m so torn and conflicted and confused but that’s sports.
