“People need to see these [bleaching] events not as depressing bits of news that adds to other depressing bits of news. They are clear signals the Great Barrier Reef is calling for urgent help and for us to do everything we can.” theguardian.com/environment/20…

Another example of detachment from reality; no understanding of scale of the basic meteorological factors that influence cloud cover and the impact on surface irradiance that would need to occur to lower water temperatures over the GBR. #AORG abc.net.au/news/2020-04-1… via @ABCNews

@McgowanHamish @abcnews Actually, very roughly, generalising from our hydrodynamic modelling. It’s about -0.035 degC SST per -W/m2 applied over 3-4 weeks, assuming the change in forcing was over the length of gbr marine park. Knock off ~20% if you only do 1/4 the area. 10W/m2 could make a big difference

@MichaelEMann I guess you could sit in those deck chairs and watch the reef disappear... If in the end this doesn’t help I doubt I will regret having tried. There is much we don’t know about aerosol - cloud interactions especially over the reef. So at the very least there is a lot to learn

@ProfTerryHughes Also worth noting that if you can manage to generate droplets just the right size you don’t need to rely on clouds. Although we haven’t figured out how to do that just yet....

@ProfTerryHughes Yep more so some summers than others. This is why the modelling shows that if the clouds over the reef are found to be susceptible to brightening, it would have helped more in 16/17 then 15/16

@ProfMattEngland @ProfTerryHughes Sounds like opinion not confirmation to me. Matt, since you are an ocean modeller why don’t you take a look at the modelling reports? Pleased to receive feedback on the science, preliminary though it is.

@ProfTerryHughes Thanks for posting Terry - this looked like a very dodgy bandaid to me. Good to have that suspicion confirmed.

@peteirvine @Oliver_Geden @SCUonline Hi Pete, just back from the fiel so no paper just yet but it’s on it’s way. We have been in touch with UW folks, at the moment working on engineering the delivery technology cloud micro physics studies still a few years off
