US, Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire Amid Pakistan Mediation ,
In a dramatic de-escalation, the United States and Iran have reached a tentative two-week ceasefire, announced late Tuesday by President Donald Trump. The agreement halts US bombing and attacks on Iran in exchange for Tehran ensuring the "complete, immediate, and safe" reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint.
Trump credited diplomatic efforts, including direct appeals from Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, who urged a two-week extension to allow talks. Sharif positioned Pakistan as a key mediator, inviting US and Iranian delegations to Islamabad for further negotiations starting around April 10. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated Tehran would accept the pause if attacks cease, framing it as conditional goodwill.
The conflict, which erupted in February with US-Israeli strikes on Iranian targets, had raised fears of wider regional war, including escalation in Lebanon. Israel has backed the pause on Iran but indicated operations against Hezbollah would continue. Markets reacted positively, with oil prices sliding on expectations of resumed shipping.
Iraqis celebrated in Baghdad, viewing the truce as regional relief. However, officials on all sides stress this is temporary not a permanent end to hostilities. Further talks in Pakistan will test whether the fragile pause leads to lasting peace or renewed fighting.
