I’m requiring you to watch Penei Sewell bury Isaiah McGuire and then celebrate with Jahmyr Gibbs in the end zone at half-speed. Best run blocker in football, and it’s not up for debate. Outstanding execution by the entire right side — everyone bought in and did their job.

@FootballGuy_AL In my experience Schefter often fails to report new information, or provide any analysis that is not transparent.

Recapping the Adam Schefter Lions related non-update “update” on the McAfee Show: • The Lions want to sign Jahmyr Gibbs to an extension this summer. • The Lions want to sign Sam LaPorta to an extension. Schefter did not explicitly say this summer. Any reporting otherwise is being deliberately misleading. • Pat McAfee, in his borderline incoherent fabricated accent, took a pot shot at Detroit by mocking he hasn’t heard a Jared Goff chant in a while. None of this was new or particularly beneficial information.

Since 2021, DJ Wonnum’s 27.0 sacks rank tied for 58th among all defenders. Former Lion Za’Darius Smith’s 26.0 sacks in that span rank 60th, while recent blockbuster free-agent edge rushers Jaelan Phillips (28.0, 50th) and Bradley Chubb (27.5, tied for 52nd) sit just ahead of Wonnum. Wonnum’s 50 QB hits over that stretch rank tied for 79th, alongside recent highly-paid free agents Kwity Paye and Dayo Odeyingbo.

@FootballGuy_AL People forget Penei won the Outland Trophy as a LT at Oregon as if he's just going to be in so over his head in the NFL. And he started his rookie season on the Left side because Decker is as hurt.

Gregg Rosenthal, around the 25-minute mark, drafted the Detroit Lions offensive line seventh overall — much higher than Ollie Connolly ranked them. Gregg specifically wanted Penei Sewell on his side and pointed out that the oldest player in the Lions’ OL two-deep is Cade Mays at just 27 years old, a player they previously highlighted on the “Underrated Players” episode. He also noted Tate Ratledge improved over the second half of last season and gave credit to Hank Fraley as one of the better offensive line coaches in the league. Connolly’s concerns centered around Sewell initially adjusting to the left side, Detroit “figuring out” the right side, and, oddly enough, the depth — which I’d argue is among the best offensive line depth in the NFL.

drafting what offensive lines we’d want for 2026 with @OllieConnolly may be the most difficult thing I’ve ever done: 🎧: landing.podtrac.com/nfldaily 📺: youtube.com/nflpodcasts

Dave Helman, around the 38-minute mark, highlighted Lions safety Christian Izien as one of his sneaky offseason additions. Helman noted the opportunity is there in Detroit given the injury situation for guys like Izien and Avonte Maddox. He thought Izien had a strong 2024 because of his versatility and fearless, physical tackling that “puts guys in the dirt.” While not someone you necessarily want playing deep coverage, Helman viewed him as a player capable of contributing in the slot and the box before being demoted in 2025. Robert Mays added that the Lions defense might be the single biggest enigma among units on teams with Super Bowl aspirations entering 2026. Derrik Klassen referred to Izien as a “band-aid” player.

Jack Campbell becomes the second-highest paid off-ball linebacker in football at $20.25M AAV, trailing only Fred Warner ($21M) and ahead of Roquan Smith ($20M), Azeez Al-Shaair ($18M) and Zach Baun ($20M) His $51.5M guaranteed ranks third behind Smith ($60M) and Warner ($56.7M), with Al-Shaair ($45.75M), Sonny Styles ($37.2M), and Baun ($34M) behind them. A cornerstone defensive piece for the Detroit Lions.
Ian Rapoport@RapSheet

The #Lions and Pro Bowl LB Jack Campbell agreed to terms on a 4-year, $81M contract extension, sources say. He gets $20.25M per year with $51.5M guaranteed. Campbell is one of the highest paid off-the-ball LB in the NFL in a deal done by agent Chase Callahan of @excelfootball.

Former Lions DT Shaun Rogers recorded 81 total tackles and 15 tackles for loss (both career highs), along with four passes defended, as a 350-pound second-round rookie in 2001. That came on a 2-14 Lions team that started 0-12 and had a rookie draft class that also included Jeff Backus and Dominic Raiola.

Detroit Lions LB Jack Campbell becomes just the third first-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft class to sign a contract extension, joining Will Anderson Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Campbell, the Lions’ green-dot defender, is one of only five players from the draft class to earn First-Team All-Pro honors and just the fourth linebacker in franchise history to receive that recognition. He also leads all defensive players from the draft class in snaps played. Last season, Campbell was PFF’s seventh-highest graded defender overall. His run defense grade was the highest by any defender since 2018 and the highest ever recorded for a linebacker in the PFF era (since 2006). He also led all defenders with 68 defensive stops.

If you're sitting in a fluorescent-lit office situation in dire need to mutter “Go. Go. Go. Hell yeah, dude” to yourself, then I have just the prescription for you. Every 25+ yard play of Sam LaPorta’s Lions career:

@Sheehan_Sports More consistently control the line of scrimmage on offense through a blend of physicality and schematic advantage. I wish I had any modicum of hope to say both sides of the football, but that would be highly unrealistic.

@sodenad Games like Patriots-Lions I totally get, and I’m on board with, however the divisional games are where I would prefer those stay as home-and-home.

I don’t mean this just for the Lions, Packers, Vikings, and Bears, but watching any divisional game on an international stage would feel diluted and sterile. It comes across like more excessive expansion than meaningful enhancement to the product.

Ari Meirov@MySportsUpdate

Another change: NFL teams will no longer be able to protect specific home games from being moved internationally. Until now, team could lock in two guaranteed home stadium games each season. That rule has been eliminated and the NFL can now move any game they want to a different country. The NFL’s global expansion push is aggressive right now.
