Cristiano Ronaldo would probably agree with every word of that quote. He's said similar things himself about not wanting special treatment. The outrage is coming from fans, not from Ronaldo. Also, this reads like a 21 year old protecting his teammate from being scapegoated, not disrespecting a legend. People are reacting to a headline, not the quote.

The backlash says more about how protective and reactive Ronaldo's fanbase is than about what Neves actually meant. And that's ok. Because it's CR7 we're talking about hear. The whole team performance was pretty awful In that game. What if Neves was deflecting attention from individual performance. And making a point that collectively, they all didn't shoulder their responsibility of carrying the nations flag higher? It's obvious some people would have blamed Ronaldo for the teams poor show, which I believe people actually did.
