@DK_Able Action Replays & Gamesharks had a longer history and varied as to mix of RAM vs. ROM editing depending on what they exploited on the platform (C64 and GameBoy better enabled, PS1 kinda), and diverged in versions, markets, as well as extras like parallel port & code search buttons

@DK_Able iirc: Game Genie used bus interception (think tristate buffers, latches, comparators) to forge "reads" from ROM which could include program code, Gameshark (N64) used custom ROM to hook exceptions & interrupt handler to control RAM (think re-"freezing" ammo counts during VBlank)

Game genie was one form of technology that I simply do not understand how it worked.
