Thanks to @CBCNS for dropping by @acadialibrary to visit with our therapy-snakes during the library's regular exam de-stressing session. It's still incredible to me that some of these students have known my pets for their entire scholastic career at @AcadiaU! Acadia hosts my pets and many other special guests & activities as part of their ongoing commitment to student mental-health and wellness. 🐍💚

I was recently asked how snakes drink, in contrast to how dogs & cats use their tongues very differently to drink. While snakes don't use their tongue to drink, they drink very easily thanks to how they use their tongues! Snakes have a little hole at the tip of their mouth that never closes, allowing them to flick their tongues without opening their mouth. With a bit of suction, that little hole acts like a straw, so they can easily drink while barely making contact with water. You wouldn't even know they were drinking until you see them swallowing. 🐍💚

Did you know that, every spring, Canada plays host to the largest congregation of snakes on Earth? While Canada may not have as many reptiles as warmer climates, we are world-renowned for our garter snakes! While most snakes are shy & solitary, garters are one of the few "social" snakes, denning with the same group of familiar "friends" every winter. The extensive limestone formations in Narcisse, Manitoba provide the PERFECT dens for tens of thousands of red-sided garter snakes, safe from the freezing temperatures of Canada's winters. Not only do they den together, but garter snakes mate socially, as well! When the Narcisse garters emerge in spring, they form thousands of "mating balls" with several males all jostling to pair with the same larger female. With so many mating garters, they form a veritable "carpet of snakes," which has gained world-renown as the largest congregation of snakes anywhere on the planet! If you'd like to plan a trip to see this incredibly unique event, check in with their blog for the next viewing season: naturenorth.com/spring/creatur…

The fear of snakes (ophidiophobia) in humans is a learned behaviour, not instinctual. And YES, it can be unlearned! I have been absolutely awestruck by the courage of so many people who push their boundaries to discover that snakes are one of the most relaxing & comforting animals to spend time with!

We've had a blast simply hanging out in my Kentville community this summer! Whether it's dropping by the Farmer's Market, taking a tour of the Devil's Half Acre or just enjoying the sunshine at our cafés, this was a summer to remember and I couldn't be more grateful to my community for being so open-minded and making me feel welcome. 💚🐍🥰

I like to imagine that my pets are super-snobby to the local wild snake community. "Hey, li'l garter, how's survival treating you? Why don't you get yourself a big ape to chauffeur you around, bring your meals and clean up after you? Oh, no ape? You poor, deprived peasant. Enjoy the grind!"

If you catch me outdoors, staring inches away from inanimate objects or buildings, I can assure you, there was an interesting spider. 🕷

Frozen pinkie mice look an awful lot like jellybeans and I have never once popped one in my mouth. One day at a time, Pete.

Them: Have the cops seen you with the snakes? Me: Yeah, it makes me pretty nervous because I think my Mexican black kingsnake has cartel ties, and my boa has warrants in Ohio.

Them: Do snakes sense fear? Me: Ma'am, this animal can't even sense that its head is smaller than its body... which is why they get stuck in our garbage all the time.
